Adam Ahmed Gemili, born on October 6, 1993, is a super-fast British runner, also known as a sprinter. He became the European champion in the 200 metres in 2014. He has also won the European title three times as part of the 4 × 100 metres relay team. In 2017, he helped the Great Britain team win a gold medal at the World Championships in the 4 × 100 metres relay.

Adam has achieved fourth place in the 200 metres at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. He also finished fourth and fifth in the same event at different World Championships. He is a special athlete because he was the first British runner to complete both the 100 metres in under 10 seconds and the 200 metres in under 20 seconds. He was also the first man of North African, Arab, or Iranian background to run the 100 metres in under 10 seconds.

Adam won silver medals in the 100 metres and 4 × 100 metres relay at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. He was also a World Junior champion in the 100 metres. He became a European Under-23 champion in both the 100 metres and the 4 × 100 metres relay. Adam has won the national championship in the 200 metres three times.

About Adam Gemili

Early Life and Education

Adam Gemili's mother was born in Iran, and his father is from Morocco. His father moved to Britain when he was a teenager. Adam went to Dartford Grammar School when he was eleven. He also studied Sport at Barking and Dagenham College.

After the 2012 Olympics, Adam studied Sports and Exercise Science at the University of East London. He wrote about how different warm-up exercises affect how fast sprinters run. Adam is a member of the Blackheath and Bromley Harriers Athletic Club.

Football Background

Before becoming a full-time sprinter, Adam was a football player. He played as a defender for teams like Dagenham & Redbridge and Thurrock F.C.. He also spent seven years playing in the youth academy at Chelsea from the age of eight. He also spent a year at Reading. In 2012, Adam decided to focus completely on athletics.

Adam's Sprinting Journey

Starting Strong (2011-2015)

In 2011, Adam won a silver medal in the 100 metres at the 2011 European Athletics Junior Championships in Tallinn, Estonia. He also helped the British team win a silver medal in the 4 × 100 metres relay. That year, he ran the 200 metres in 20.98 seconds, which was the fastest time for a European junior.

In June 2012, Adam ran a time that qualified him for the 2012 London Olympics in the 100 metres. He ran 10.08 seconds, which was the second fastest time ever by a British junior at that point. He was chosen for the British 4 × 100 metres relay team for the Olympics.

On July 11, 2012, Adam won the gold medal in the 100 metres at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Athletics. He finished in 10.05 seconds, setting a new championship record. This time was also a new British junior record. At the 2012 London Olympics, Adam finished third in his 100 metres semi-final. He was very close to reaching the final.

In 2013, Adam started training for the 200 metres. At the 2013 World Championships in Athletics in Moscow, he ran a personal best of 19.98 seconds in the semi-final. This made him only the second British athlete to run under 20 seconds in the event. He finished fifth in the final.

Adam Gemili (second from the right) won his first big individual title in the 200 metres at the 2014 European Athletics Championships in Zürich.

Adam won his first senior medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. He came second in the 100 metres final. Two weeks later, he won his first senior title, taking gold in the 200 metres at the 2014 European Athletics Championships. He matched his personal best time of 19.98 seconds.

Breaking Records and Olympic Dreams (2015-2019)

On May 31, 2015, Adam ran the 100 metres in 9.97 seconds. This was the first time he ran under 10 seconds, but the wind was too strong for it to count as an official record. Two months later, in July, he officially broke the 10-second barrier. He ran 9.97 seconds legally, becoming the 100th man in history to do so. However, he fell as he crossed the finish line and injured his hamstring, which made him miss the 2015 World Championships.

Adam made it to the men's 200 metres final at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He finished fourth, missing a bronze medal by just six thousandths of a second!

In 2017, Adam was part of the British 4 × 100 metres relay team at the World Championships. They won a historic gold medal, setting a new national and European record. This race was also famous because it was Usain Bolt's last race, and he got injured during it.

Adam competed in both the 100 metres and 200 metres at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar. He just missed out on the 100 metres final. In the 200 metres final, he was leading for a while but finished in fourth place. He then ran the first part of the men's 4 × 100 metres relay, helping the team win a silver medal and set a new European record of 37.36 seconds.
