Adam's Sprinting Career Highlights

Starting Out in Sprinting (2011–2015)

Adam Gemili started his sprinting career strong. In 2011, he won a silver medal in the 100 metres at the 2011 European Athletics Junior Championships in Tallinn, Estonia. He also helped the British team win another silver medal in the 4x100 metres relay.

In 2012, Adam ran a very fast 100 metres race in Germany. His time of 10.08 seconds was good enough to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics. He was chosen to be part of the British 4x100 metres relay team for the Olympics.

Later that year, Adam won a gold medal at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Athletics. He finished the 100 metres race in 10.05 seconds. This time broke the championship record and was one of the fastest ever by a junior athlete. At the London Olympics, he ran 10.06 seconds in the 100 metres semi-final. He just missed out on reaching the final.

In 2013, Adam started training for the 200 metres race. He quickly became very good at it. At the 2013 World Championships in Athletics in Moscow, he ran the 200 metres in 19.98 seconds. This was an amazing achievement, as he became only the second British athlete to run under 20 seconds in this event. He finished fifth in the final.

Adam won his first major medal as a senior athlete at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. He took home a silver medal in the 100 metres race. Just two weeks later, he won his first senior title. He won the 200 metres at the 2014 European Athletics Championships with a time of 19.98 seconds.

Big Races and Medals (2015–2019)

In 2015, Adam achieved a huge milestone in the 100 metres. He ran it in 9.97 seconds, which is under the 10-second mark. This made him the 100th man in history to legally break the 10-second barrier. Unfortunately, he got a hamstring injury right after this race and missed the 2015 World Championships in Athletics.

At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Adam reached the men's 200 metres final. It was a very close race! He, Christophe Lemaitre, and Churandy Martina all crossed the finish line almost at the same time. Adam finished fourth, missing a bronze medal by just six thousandths of a second.

In 2017, Adam was part of the British 4x100 metres relay team. They won a historic gold medal at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics. Their time was a new national and European record. This race was also special because it was Usain Bolt's last race.

Adam competed in both the 100 metres and 200 metres at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar. He just missed out on the 100 metres final. In the 200 metres final, he was leading for a bit but finished in fourth place. He then ran the first part of the men's 4x100 metres relay. The team won a silver medal behind the United States, setting another European record.

Adam also became a board member of the Athletics Association in 2020. This group helps support track and field athletes.
