Afrikaner people facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Afrikaners are a group of white people from South Africa. They speak a language called Afrikaans, which is their first language. They also follow a special culture called the Afrikaans culture. Most Afrikaners have ancestors from countries like the Netherlands, Germany, and France (especially French Huguenots). Sometimes they are also called Boers, Voortrekkers, or Burgers, depending on the situation. In South Africa, about 3 million white people speak Afrikaans as their main language. If they choose to follow the Afrikaans culture, they are considered Afrikaners.

The History of Afrikaners

Early Settlers in South Africa

The story of Afrikaners began a long time ago. In 1652, the Dutch started a settlement at the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. This was a stop for ships traveling between Europe and Asia. Many people from the Netherlands came to live there.

Soon, other Europeans joined them. French people called Huguenots, who were escaping religious problems in France, also came. Germans and other Europeans arrived too. Over time, these different groups mixed and started to form a new community. They developed their own way of life and a new language.

The Great Trek and New Lands

As the settlement grew, some of these early settlers, known as Trekboers, moved further into the country. They were farmers looking for new land. Later, in the 1830s, a bigger movement happened called the Great Trek. Many Afrikaners, known as Voortrekkers (meaning "pioneers" or "those who trek ahead"), left the Cape Colony. They wanted to be free from British rule and find new places to live.

They traveled in wagons across vast lands, facing many challenges. They eventually settled in new areas, where they set up their own independent states. These states were called the South African Republic (also known as the Transvaal) and the Orange Free State.

The Boer Wars

The discovery of gold and diamonds in these new states led to conflicts. The British Empire wanted control of these valuable resources. This led to two wars between the British and the Afrikaners, known as the Boer Wars.

  • The First Boer War (1880-1881) was short. The Afrikaners won, keeping their independence for a while.
  • The Second Boer War (1899-1902) was much bigger and harder. The British sent many soldiers. Many Afrikaner women and children were placed in concentration camps, where conditions were very difficult. In the end, the British won, and the Afrikaner states became part of the British Empire.

Afrikaners in Modern South Africa

After the wars, South Africa became a single country in 1910. Afrikaners played a big role in its history. They worked to rebuild their communities and keep their culture strong. Today, Afrikaners are an important part of South Africa's diverse population. They live all over the country and contribute to many different areas, like farming, business, and arts.

Afrikaans Language and Culture

The Afrikaans Language

The language spoken by Afrikaners is Afrikaans. It developed from the Dutch language brought by the first settlers. Over hundreds of years, it changed and became its own unique language. It borrowed words from other languages spoken in South Africa, like Khoisan and Bantu languages, as well as Malay and Portuguese.

Afrikaans is one of the official languages of South Africa. It is spoken by millions of people, not just Afrikaners. It is known for being a very descriptive language.

Afrikaner Culture

Afrikaner culture is rich and diverse. It includes:

  • Music: Traditional folk music often features instruments like the guitar and accordion.
  • Food: Many traditional dishes are popular, such as braai (barbecue), biltong (dried meat), and boerewors (a type of sausage).
  • Literature: Afrikaans has a strong tradition of poetry, novels, and plays.
  • Values: Family, community, and a connection to the land are often important values.

Many Afrikaners are also very religious, with a strong connection to the Dutch Reformed Church.
