How Air Creebec Started
Air Creebec was created in June 1982. It started flying on July 1, 1982. A very important person named Billy Diamond helped start the airline. He was the first Grand Chief of the Grand Council of the Cree.
When the airline first began, the Cree people owned 51% of the company. Another airline, Austin Airways, owned the other 49%. In 1988, the Cree people bought all of the airline. This made Air Creebec fully owned by the Cree. It was the biggest business deal ever made by an Indigenous group in Canada at that time.
There is a famous story about the airline's beginning. During talks to start the airline, the Premier of Quebec, René Lévesque, supposedly said, "Indians don't run airlines Billy." Billy Diamond, the founder, replied, "Well, this Indian is going to."
In 2012, Air Creebec stopped its flights to La Grande Rivière Airport.
In 2023, Tanya Pash became the first female CEO of Air Creebec. She had been the Chief Operating Officer for 10 years before that.
