Ajinkya Rahane (born 6 June 1988) is a famous Indian cricket player. He used to be the captain and vice-captain of the Indian Test cricket team. He plays as a batsman for the Indian team in all types of cricket games.
Currently, Rahane leads the Mumbai team in the Ranji Trophy. He also plays for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL and Leicestershire in the County Championship. Rahane is known for batting in the middle of the order in Test matches. In shorter games, he usually bats at the top. India has lost only one match when he was captain.
Rahane started his professional cricket career in 2007 for Mumbai. He played his first international Twenty20 (T20I) match in August 2011 against England. His first Test match was in March 2013. He scored his first Test century in New Zealand. Under his leadership, India won a big series in Australia in 2020-21.

Growing Up and Family
Ajinkya Rahane was born on June 6, 1988. His parents are Madhukar Baburao Rahane and Sujata Rahane. He has a younger brother, Shashank, and a sister, Apurva.
Early Days in Cricket
When Ajinkya was just seven, his father took him to a small cricket coaching camp. They couldn't afford expensive training. He trained with a former Indian batsman, Pravin Amre, from the age of 17. Rahane finished his schooling at SV Joshi High School in Dombivli.
Rahane married his childhood friend, Radhika Dhopavkar, in September 2014. They have a daughter, Aarya, born in 2019, and a son, born in 2022.
Playing for Different Teams
Rahane showed great talent early on. He scored two centuries when the India U-19 team visited New Zealand in 2007.
First-Class Cricket
Rahane played his first professional match at 19 for Mumbai in September 2007. He scored 143 runs in his very first game! He also scored 172 runs for West Zone in 2007-08.
In the 2008-09 Ranji season, Rahane scored 1089 runs. This helped Mumbai win their 38th title. He scored an amazing 265 runs not-out in a match against Hyderabad in 2009-10. Rahane has scored over 1000 runs in three different seasons. In April 2019, he played for Hampshire in England for two months.
One-Day (List A) Cricket
Rahane's first One-Day (List A) game was for Mumbai in March 2007. He scored 61 runs in that match. He scored two centuries in a tournament in Australia. This helped him get picked for India's One-Day International (ODI) team in 2011.
Rahane also played for the India U-19 team and India A team. In September 2018, he became the captain of the Mumbai team for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He also led India C to win the Deodhar Trophy in October 2018, scoring 144 runs not-out in the final.
In the 2023-24 season, Rahane led the Mumbai team to win the Ranji Trophy. Even though his own scores were not very high, his team won the final by 169 runs.
Playing for India
Test Matches
Rahane was chosen for the Test team in November 2011. He waited 16 months for his chance to play. He finally made his Test debut on March 22, 2013, against Australia. He got this chance because other players were injured.
Even though his first match wasn't great, Rahane was picked for India's tour of South Africa in 2013-14. He scored 209 runs in that series, averaging 69.66. This was a great performance against strong bowlers.
Rahane scored his first Test century (118 runs) in New Zealand in February 2014. He then scored his second century at Lord's Cricket Ground in England in July 2014. He became only the fourth Indian batsman to score a Test century on his first time playing at Lord's.
In 2014-15, Rahane scored his third Test century in Australia. He made 399 runs in that series against tough Australian bowlers. In 2015, he set a world record by taking eight catches in a Test match against Sri Lanka. He also scored his fourth Test century in that series.
In December 2015, Rahane made centuries in both innings of a Test match against South Africa. He became only the fifth Indian player to do this. In August 2016, he reached his highest Test batting ranking of No. 8 in the world.
On March 25, 2017, Rahane became India's 33rd Test Captain. He led the team in a match against Australia. He scored a century in Sri Lanka in August 2017. In 2018, he led the Indian team against Afghanistan. He also scored important half-centuries in England and Australia.
In 2019, he scored a century in the West Indies. He also scored 115 runs against South Africa, helping his team win. In November 2019, he scored 86 runs against Bangladesh.
In December 2020, Rahane became the captain for the last three matches of India's tour of Australia. This was because Virat Kohli was on paternity leave. Rahane scored 112 runs in the second Test, leading India to a big win. India went on to win the series 2-1, which was a huge achievement. Critics praised his captaincy.
Rahane has captained India in 6 Test matches, winning 4 and drawing 2. Despite some tough times with his batting form, he continues to be an important player.
One-Day International (ODI) Matches
Rahane got a spot in India's ODI team in 2011 after scoring two centuries in Australia. He made his ODI debut against England in August 2011. He scored 40 runs in that match.
He scored his second ODI fifty in the 2013-14 Asia Cup. Rahane has scored three centuries in ODI matches. His highest ODI score is 111 runs against Sri Lanka in 2014. In 2015, he was made captain of India for a tour of Zimbabwe. India won that series 3-0.
Twenty20 International (T20I) Matches
Rahane played his first international T20 match for India in August 2011 against England. He scored a half-century (61 runs off 39 balls) in that game. This match was also the only T20I played by former Indian captain Rahul Dravid.
Rahane was part of the Indian team that reached the final of the 2014 World T20. He also captained India in two T20 matches against Zimbabwe.
Centuries in International Matches
Ajinkya Rahane has scored 12 centuries in Test matches. He has also scored 3 centuries in One-Day International (ODI) matches. He has not scored a century in Twenty20 International matches.
- His highest score in Test matches is 188 runs. This happened against New Zealand in October 2016.
- His highest score in ODI matches is 111 runs. This happened against Sri Lanka in November 2011.
Playing in the IPL
Rahane joined Rajasthan Royals for the 2012 Indian Premier League. Before that, he was with Mumbai Indians but didn't get many chances to play. Rahul Dravid and Shane Watson saw his talent and made him an opening batsman for Rajasthan Royals. Rahane said that opening with Rahul Dravid helped him show his skills.
Rahane did very well with Rajasthan Royals. He scored 98 runs in his first game of IPL 2012. He then scored an unbeaten 103 runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore. He became the first batsman to score a century in the 2012 IPL for Rajasthan Royals. He was also their top run-scorer.
Many people credit Rahul Dravid for helping Rahane become a better player. Dravid helped him become a versatile batsman who can play in any position and in any type of game. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar praised Rahane for always trying to improve.
Rahane played for Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016 and 2017 when Rajasthan Royals were banned. He was the top run-scorer for Pune in 2016. In 2018, Rajasthan Royals bought him back. He became their captain after Steve Smith stepped down.
In 2019, Rahane scored a century against Delhi Capitals. He became the highest run-scorer for Rajasthan Royals that season. In November 2019, he moved to Delhi Capitals. He then joined Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022.
In 2023, Chennai Super Kings bought Rahane. He played a very important role in helping CSK win the IPL title that year. He batted at number 3 and scored runs very quickly. This was his first IPL title win!
