Aladdin: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is the official music album for the 1992 Disney animated movie, Aladdin. Walt Disney Records released the album on October 27, 1992. You could buy it on CD and cassette tape.
Later, special versions of the soundtrack were released. In 1994, a big four-disc set called The Music Behind the Magic: The Musical Artistry of Alan Menken, Howard Ashman & Tim Rice came out. It included demos and unreleased songs. A new version with updated lyrics and artwork was released in 2001. Then, in 2004, a "Special Edition" came out with two demo songs that hadn't been released before.
The music from Aladdin won many awards. The composer, Alan Menken, won an Academy Award for Best Original Score and a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score. The lyricist, Tim Rice, won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for "A Whole New World". This song, sung by Regina Belle, also won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year.
The Aladdin soundtrack is one of the most popular animated film soundtracks ever. It sold over 3 million copies in the United States and 300,000 in Canada.

How the Music Was Made
Alan Menken created the music for Aladdin. He used a special way of composing, similar to his work on The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. This means that many of the background music pieces (called "score cues") use parts of the main songs' melodies.
Character Themes
- Aladdin's theme sounds like the song "One Jump Ahead". You can hear it in score pieces like "Street Urchins" and "Aladdin's World".
- Jasmine's theme first appears when she is introduced at the palace. This music was later turned into the song "To Be Free" for the stage musical.
- The Sultan often has royal fanfare music playing when he appears.
- Jafar's theme is darker. It sounds like an instrumental version of "Arabian Nights" or the deleted song "My Finest Hour".
- Genie shares a similar musical theme with Jasmine. This shows his wish to be free, just like Jasmine. This theme also became part of the song "To Be Free" in the stage musical.
When Aladdin and Jasmine are together, you'll often hear an instrumental version of "A Whole New World".
Songs That Didn't Make It
Before the movie was finished, some songs were written but not used. These are called "cut songs." Howard Ashman and Alan Menken wrote many of them. Later, Tim Rice also worked on some.
Some of these cut songs, like "Proud of Your Boy" and "High Adventure," were later released as demo versions on special editions of the soundtrack. "Proud of Your Boy" is even in the Aladdin stage musical today!
