Alan Hutton (born 30 November 1984) is a Scottish former professional footballer. He played as a right back, which is a defensive position on the right side of the field.
Hutton started his career with Rangers in Scotland. He helped them win a league title in 2005. In 2008, he moved to England to play for Tottenham Hotspur. He even helped them win the League Cup that same year!
After a short loan to Sunderland in 2010, Hutton joined Aston Villa in 2011. He had some tough times at first and was loaned out to other clubs like Mallorca, Nottingham Forest, and Bolton Wanderers.
Later, Hutton became a fan favorite at Aston Villa. His strong defending earned him the nickname "The Scottish Cafu", after a famous Brazilian defender. He played over 200 games for Aston Villa. He left the club in 2019 after helping them get promoted back to the Premier League.
Hutton also played for the Scotland national team 50 times between 2007 and 2016. He was even considered for the Great Britain Olympic team for the London 2012 Olympics, but he didn't make the final squad.

Alan Hutton played for several big clubs during his career. He was known for his strong defending and his ability to run up and down the right side of the pitch.
Playing for Rangers
Hutton joined Rangers, a famous Scottish club, on 4 September 2000. He made his first team debut on 22 December 2002. This was in a Scottish Premier League match against Partick Thistle.
He played more games in the 2003–04 season. He scored his first goal for Rangers on 23 March 2004. This goal was against Dunfermline Athletic at Ibrox, Rangers' home ground.
In the 2004–05 season, Hutton played 12 games. Rangers won both the Scottish Premier League title and the Scottish League Cup that year. However, he broke his leg in February 2005. This injury kept him out of the game for eight months.
The 2005–06 season was a bit tough for Rangers. Hutton played 23 games, often competing for his spot. In the summer of 2007, he signed a new five-year contract with Rangers.
Hutton started the 2007–08 season very well. He even received praise from famous manager Sir Alex Ferguson. He helped Rangers win important matches in the UEFA Champions League. Overall, Hutton played 94 league games for Rangers. He scored two league goals and two other goals in cup competitions.
Time at Tottenham Hotspur
In January 2008, Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur tried to sign Hutton. He first said no to their offer. But on 30 January 2008, the transfer was finally completed. The fee was reported to be around £9 million.
He played his first game for Spurs on 2 February. It was a 1–1 draw against Manchester United. In only his third game for the club, Hutton helped Tottenham win the 2008 Football League Cup Final. They beat Chelsea in the final.
Loan to Sunderland
On 1 February 2010, Hutton joined Sunderland on loan. He stayed there until the end of the season. He made his debut in a 1–1 draw against Wigan Athletic.
Sunderland wanted to sign Hutton permanently. However, they couldn't agree on the transfer fee with Tottenham.
Back at Tottenham
After his loan, Hutton returned to Spurs. He scored a goal in the first game of the 2010–11 season. This helped Tottenham win 3–1 against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
He was Tottenham's main right-back for most of that season. He played an important part in Tottenham's 2010–11 UEFA Champions League journey. They reached the quarter-finals, beating teams like Internazionale. His season ended in April due to a knee injury.
At the start of the 2011–12 season, Hutton found himself playing less. Another right-back, Kyle Walker, was chosen ahead of him. Hutton later said that his time at Tottenham became difficult.
Joining Aston Villa
On 31 August 2011, Aston Villa signed Hutton on a four-year contract. This move meant he would work again with Alex McLeish, his former manager at Rangers.
Hutton made his debut for Aston Villa on 10 September. It was a 2–2 draw against Everton. His first season at Villa was not easy. He was even sent off in a game against Arsenal.
His future at the club was uncertain. New manager Paul Lambert signed another right-back. Hutton was left out of the team for a pre-season tour. He admitted it was a tough situation for him.
Loan to Nottingham Forest
To get more playing time, Hutton joined Nottingham Forest on loan. This was an emergency loan until January 2013. He made a quick impact in his debut. He helped Nottingham Forest win 2–1 against Wolves.
Loan to Mallorca
On 29 January 2013, Hutton was loaned to Spanish club Mallorca. He played his first game for them on 3 February. Even though the club was relegated, Hutton wanted to stay. However, Mallorca could not afford to sign him permanently.
Loan to Bolton Wanderers
On 28 February 2014, Hutton joined Bolton Wanderers on another loan. He made his debut on 11 March 2014. Bolton extended his loan until the end of the season.
Return to Aston Villa
After his loan spells, Hutton returned to Aston Villa in 2014. He had a great pre-season and became the first-choice right-back again. On 16 September, he signed a new three-year contract. This showed a big change in his career at Villa.
He scored his first goal for Villa in December 2014 against Leicester City. He played in the 2015 FA Cup Final, where Villa lost to Arsenal. He also played regularly in the 2015–16 season. However, Aston Villa finished last and were relegated from the Premier League.
On 14 June 2018, Hutton signed another new contract with Villa. He scored a memorable goal in a derby match against Birmingham City on 25 November 2018. He ran from his own half and scored with his left foot.
Hutton left Aston Villa at the end of the 2018–19 season. He helped them win promotion back to the Premier League. On 19 February 2020, he announced his retirement from professional football.
International Career
Playing for Scotland
Alan Hutton played for Scotland at different levels. He represented the Under 21 and B teams.
He was first called up to the senior Scotland men's national football team in May 2007. He made his international debut on 30 May 2007 against Austria. His first competitive game was against Lithuania in September 2007. Hutton was part of the Scotland team that famously beat France in Paris in September 2007.
Hutton earned his 50th cap (international appearance) in March 2016. This was in a 1–0 win against the Czech Republic. In November 2016, Scotland manager Gordon Strachan announced that Hutton had retired from international football.
