Alan Hutton (born on November 30, 1984) is a Scottish former professional footballer. He played as a right back, which is a defensive position on the right side of the field.
Alan Hutton started his football journey with Rangers in Scotland. He helped them win the league title in 2005. Later, he moved to England and joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2008. With Tottenham, he won the League Cup that same year.
After a short loan period with Sunderland in 2010, Hutton moved to Aston Villa in 2011. He had some tough times at first and was loaned out to other clubs like Mallorca, Nottingham Forest, and Bolton Wanderers.
However, Alan Hutton made a great comeback at Aston Villa. His strong defending earned him the nickname "The Scottish Cafu", after a famous Brazilian defender. He played over 200 games for Aston Villa. He left the club in 2019 after helping them get promoted back to the Premier League.
Hutton also played for the Scotland national team. He made 50 appearances for his country between 2007 and 2016. He was even considered for the Great Britain Olympic football team for the London 2012 Olympics, but he didn't make the final team.

Club Career Highlights
Starting at Rangers
Alan Hutton joined the Rangers youth team on September 4, 2000. He made his first team debut on December 22, 2002, in a Scottish Premier League match against Partick Thistle. That was his only game that season.
During the 2003–04 season, he played 11 games. He scored his first goal for Rangers against Dunfermline Athletic at Ibrox on March 23, 2004.
In the 2004–05 season, he played 12 games. Rangers won both the Scottish Premier League title and the Scottish League Cup that year. Unfortunately, he broke his leg in February 2005 during a game against Kilmarnock. This injury kept him out of action for eight months.
The 2005–06 season was a bit tough for Rangers. Alan Hutton played 23 games, often competing with Dutch player Fernando Ricksen for the right-back spot. In the summer of 2007, he signed a new five-year contract with Rangers.
Hutton started the 2007–08 season very well. Even famous manager Sir Alex Ferguson praised his performance. He played an important part in Rangers' early wins in the UEFA Champions League group stage. These wins were against VfB Stuttgart and Olympique Lyonnais.
Overall, Alan Hutton played 94 league games for Rangers. He scored two league goals. He also scored goals in the UEFA Cup and the Scottish Cup.
Moving to Tottenham Hotspur
In January 2008, Premier League team Tottenham Hotspur tried to sign Hutton. They offered around £5 million. He first said no, and then again when they offered more. But finally, on January 30, 2008, the transfer was completed for about £9 million.
He played his first game for Spurs on February 2, 2008, in a 1–1 draw against Manchester United. He couldn't play in the rest of Spurs' UEFA Cup games that season because he had already played for Rangers in the competition. In only his third game for Tottenham, he helped them win the 2008 Football League Cup Final against Chelsea.
Loan to Sunderland
On February 1, 2010, Hutton joined Sunderland on loan until the end of the season. He played his first game for them in a 1–1 draw with Wigan Athletic. On April 24, 2010, he received a red card after a clash with Jozy Altidore. Sunderland wanted to sign him permanently, but they couldn't agree on the transfer fee with Spurs.
Back at Tottenham
Since Sunderland didn't sign him, Hutton went back to Spurs. He scored in the first game of the 2010–11 season. He also won a penalty, which Rafael van der Vaart scored, helping Tottenham win 3–1 against Wolverhampton Wanderers. He played the full 90 minutes against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
He was often the first-choice right-back for Tottenham during the 2010–11 season. He was chosen over Croatian player Vedran Ćorluka. Hutton was also important in Tottenham's 2010–11 UEFA Champions League journey. They reached the quarter-finals, including a memorable 3–1 win over European champions Internazionale. However, his season ended in April due to a knee injury.
At the start of the 2011–12 season, Kyle Walker became the main right-back for Tottenham. Hutton was then linked with a move to Aston Villa. After joining Aston Villa, Hutton said that his time at Tottenham had been difficult.
Joining Aston Villa
On August 31, 2011, Aston Villa announced they had signed Alan Hutton on a four-year contract. This move reunited him with Alex McLeish, who was his manager at Rangers. Hutton said that Aston Villa was the "only place he wanted to go."
Hutton's first game for Aston Villa was on September 10, 2011. It was a 2–2 draw away against Everton. In another game, his tackle on Shane Long injured Long's knee. This tackle caused a lot of discussion, but Hutton was defended by his manager and assistant manager. Later that season, Hutton was sent off in a 2–1 loss to Arsenal.
His first season at Villa Park was not easy, and his future at the club was uncertain. New Villa manager Paul Lambert signed another right-back, Matthew Lowton. Hutton was left out of the team for the pre-season tour. He admitted it was a tough situation but hoped to get back into the first team.
Loan to Nottingham Forest
Since he wasn't playing much at Aston Villa, Hutton joined Nottingham Forest on loan until January 2, 2013. He made an immediate impact in his debut, helping Nottingham Forest win 2–1 against Wolves. He played in all the games during his loan spell.
Loan to Mallorca
On January 29, 2013, Hutton was loaned to Spanish team Mallorca until the end of the season. He debuted on February 3, 2013, in a 3–0 loss. Even though the club was relegated, Hutton wanted to stay. However, Mallorca couldn't afford to sign him permanently.
Loan to Bolton Wanderers
On February 28, 2014, he joined Football League Championship side Bolton Wanderers on a short loan. He made his debut on March 11, 2014, in a 0–0 draw with Derby County. Bolton extended his loan until the end of the 2013–14 season because he played well.
Return to Aston Villa

After his loan spells, Hutton returned to Villa in 2014. He made a surprising return in a pre-season friendly. His good form continued, and he became the first-choice right-back again for the new Premier League season. On September 16, he signed a new three-year contract with Aston Villa. He scored his first goal for Villa in December 2014 against Leicester City.
He played in the 2015 FA Cup Final, which Villa lost 4–0 to Arsenal. He also played regularly (28 games) in the 2015–16 season, when Aston Villa finished last and were relegated from the Premier League. On June 14, 2018, Hutton signed another contract to stay at Villa Park until 2019.
Hutton scored a memorable goal in a "Second City derby" win against Birmingham City on November 25, 2018. He ran from his own half and scored with his left foot.
Alan Hutton left Aston Villa at the end of the 2018–19 season. On February 19, 2020, he announced that he was retiring from professional football.
