Alberta's Veterans Memorial Highway
Highway 36 is a major route that helps people travel across a big part of Alberta. It's important for connecting different communities and for moving goods.
What is Highway 36?
Highway 36 is a provincial highway. This means it's a main road managed by the government of Alberta. It runs for about 679 kilometres (422 miles). That's a really long drive!
Where Does it Go?
The highway starts in the south near a small village called Warner. It then travels north through many towns and counties. Some of the places it passes through include:
- Taber
- Vauxhall
- Brooks (nearby)
- Hanna (nearby)
- Killam
- Viking
- Two Hills
- Vilna
- It ends in the northern town of Lac La Biche.
Along its journey, Highway 36 crosses several rivers. These include the Oldman River, the Bow River, the Red Deer River, the Battle River, and the North Saskatchewan River.
Why "Veterans Memorial"?
The official name, "Veterans Memorial Highway," honours all the brave people who have served in the armed forces. It's a way to remember their sacrifices and contributions.
Future Plans
There are discussions about making Highway 36 even longer. The Lac La Biche County wants to extend it north. This would connect it to Highway 63, which goes towards Fort McMurray. This change would mean renaming Highway 881 to be part of Highway 36.
