Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Alcovy River (say it: al-CO-vee) is a river in Georgia, United States. It is about 69 miles (111 km) long. This river is a smaller stream, called a tributary, that flows into the Ocmulgee River. The Ocmulgee River then joins other rivers to form the Altamaha River, which eventually flows into the Atlantic Ocean. So, the Alcovy River is part of a big system of waterways that reach the sea!

Where Does the Alcovy River Flow?

The Alcovy River starts in eastern Gwinnett County, near a town called Lawrenceville. From there, it flows south through several counties: Walton, Newton, and Jasper counties. The river even forms part of the border between Newton and Jasper counties.

It eventually meets up with the Yellow River and the South River. Together, these rivers form the Ocmulgee River within Lake Jackson. Lake Jackson is a large lake created by a dam on the Ocmulgee.

North of I-20, the Alcovy River changes for about 4 miles (6 km). It becomes a low-lying swampy area before turning back into a typical Piedmont stream. This swampy part is special because it has a rare tree called the tupelo gum tree.
