Alexander Campbell (1779 – November 5, 1857) was an important politician from Ohio. He was a member of the National Republican Party and served in the United States Senate. This is one of the highest political positions in the U.S. government.

Early Life and Moving to Ohio
Alexander Campbell was born in 1779 in Frederick County, Virginia. As a young person, he moved with his family. First, they went to eastern Tennessee, and then they moved to Kentucky.
Campbell studied medicine at Transylvania University. After finishing his studies, he decided to move to Ohio. He arrived in Ohio in 1803 and settled in Adams County, Ohio a year later.
A Career in Politics
Alexander Campbell began his political career in Ohio. He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1807. This group helps make laws for the state of Ohio. He served there until December 1809.
Serving in the U.S. Senate
In 1808, Campbell tried to become a United States Senator but didn't win. However, a few months later, he won a special election for another Senate seat. He served as a U.S. Senator from 1809 to 1813. This meant he helped make laws for the entire country.
Returning to Ohio Politics
After his time in the U.S. Senate, Campbell continued to be active in Ohio politics. He served again in the Ohio House of Representatives in 1819. Later, he was a member of the Ohio Senate from 1822 to 1824. He also served in the Ohio House again from 1832 to 1833.
In 1826, Campbell ran for governor of Ohio. However, he was not successful in that election.
Presidential Elector
Campbell also played a role in presidential elections. He was an Ohio Presidential elector in 1820. In this role, he voted for James Monroe to be president. He was also a Presidential elector in 1836, voting for William Henry Harrison.
Fighting Against Slavery
Alexander Campbell was an early supporter of ending slavery. He was known as an abolitionist. This means he believed slavery was wrong and worked to get rid of it. His efforts showed his strong beliefs in fairness and freedom for everyone.
