Biography
Alexander Legkov took part in three Winter Olympic Games. These were in 2006, 2010, and 2014.
Olympic Highlights
At the 2010 Winter Olympics, Legkov almost won a medal in the 30 km double pursuit race. He finished in fourth place, just 1.2 seconds behind the bronze medalist. His team also placed eighth in the 4 × 10 km relay at the Vancouver Games.
The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi were very successful for Legkov. He won the gold medal in the 50 km freestyle race. He also earned a silver medal with his team in the 4 × 10 km relay.
World Cup and Championships
In the 2006–07 World Cup season, Legkov finished second overall. He was right behind Tobias Angerer from Germany.
At the FIS Nordic World Ski Championship in Sapporo in 2007, he won a silver medal. This was for the 4 × 10 km relay race. He also placed sixth in two other individual races.
Legkov became the overall winner of the Tour de Ski 2012–13. He won this tough competition on January 6, 2013. He beat other top skiers like Dario Cologna and Petter Northug.
Retirement from Sport
Alexander Legkov announced he was retiring from competitive skiing on April 6, 2018. He made this announcement during a sports event in Khanty-Mansiysk.
Fair Play and Results
In December 2016, some of Legkov's results from the 2014 Winter Olympics were questioned. This was part of a larger investigation into fair play rules. In November 2017, his 2014 Olympic results were temporarily removed.
However, in February 2018, a special court called the Court of Arbitration for Sport looked at his case again. They decided that there was not enough proof that Legkov had broken any rules. Because of this, his results from Sochi 2014, including his two medals, were given back to him.
On January 19, 2019, this decision was confirmed by a higher court. This meant that Alexander Legkov was completely cleared and his Olympic achievements were final.
Political Life
After his skiing career, Alexander Legkov became involved in politics. On March 27, 2016, he joined the United Russia party. He wanted to become a representative for the Moscow Oblast Duma.
In May 2016, he won the party's first round of voting. On September 18, 2016, he was elected as a deputy. A deputy is like a representative in a local government. He now works on the Committee for Youth and Sports Affairs.
In November 2016, Legkov was chosen to lead the regional office of the Young Army Cadets National Movement in the Moscow Oblast. Since 2018, he has been a deputy for the United Russia group in the 6th Moscow Oblast Duma. He is also the Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Youth and Sports Affairs.
Legkov is also a member of PutinTeam. This is a group that supports Vladimir Putin.
