Sergey Aleksandrovich Ustiugov (born on April 8, 1992) is a famous Russian cross-country skier. He has won an Olympic gold medal, several World Championships, and the exciting Tour de Ski competition.

Sergey Ustiugov's Skiing Journey

Starting Young: Early Skiing Days

Sergey Ustiugov began his journey in cross-country skiing in 2001. He joined the biathlon section at a sports school in Mezhdurechensky. His first coach was Ivan Gennadievich Vragin.

Just ten years later, he won a gold medal in sprint at the World Youth Cross-Country Skiing Championships in Otepää, Estonia. The next year, in Erzurum, Turkey, he became a four-time champion at the Youth Championships. He won in sprint, a 10 km race, skiathlon, and relay events.

In 2013, he competed in the Junior Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic, for the Under-23 group. There, he earned two gold medals in the 15 km freestyle and 30 km skiathlon races. At the 2014 Junior Championships in Val di Fiemme, he won another gold in the individual sprint.

World Cup Debut and New Coaches

Ustiugov made his first appearance in the World Cup on February 6, 2011. This was during a relay event.

At the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Val di Fiemme, Ustiugov and his relay team won a bronze medal. Later that year, he achieved his first individual podium finish in Davos. He placed third in the freestyle sprint. In January 2014, he won a stage in the freestyle sprint in Nové Město, Czech Republic.

He competed in the 2014 Winter Olympics in the sprint event. He finished fifth after a fall near the end of the race. In May 2014, Ustiugov changed coaches. He started working with the Swiss-German team of Reto Burgermeister and Isabel Knaute.

Becoming a Champion: Tour de Ski and World Titles

During the 2015–16 World Cup season, Ustiugov had many successes. In January 2015, he and Alexey Petukhov won the team sprint in Otepää. He also placed second in freestyle sprint and third in a 15 km individual freestyle race in Rybinsk.

He competed in the 2016 Tour de Ski and finished third overall. He won silver and bronze medals in a 15 km freestyle and relay event in Nové Město. In February, he won the 15 km mass start freestyle event in Falun, Sweden. He finished second overall in the 2016 Ski Tour Canada, reaching the podium five times.

In October 2016, Ustiugov changed coaches again. He began training with German coach Markus Kramer. Kramer had previously coached Olympic champion Alexander Legkov.

In the new season, Ustiugov won the 2016-17 Tour de Ski in January. He won five stages in a row, setting a new record. He was the second Russian skier to win the Tour de Ski.

At the 2017 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, Ustiugov won a silver medal in the sprint. He then earned his first gold medal at the Championships in the 30 km skiathlon. With Nikita Kriukov, he won a second gold medal in the team sprint. After the Championships, he finished third in a classical sprint in Drammen. He ended the season in second place overall.

Challenges and Comebacks

The next season started slowly for Ustiugov. However, he soon improved, finishing as runner-up three times before the Tour de Ski. He started the Tour de Ski well, winning a sprint stage. But he later had to withdraw due to back pain.

Ustiugov was not invited to the 2018 Winter Olympics by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This was due to doping accusations against some Russian athletes. He appealed this decision, but it was not successful. He then competed in the Russian Cup, winning the team sprint with Alexander Legkov.

On October 23, 2018, Ustiugov injured his finger during practice. He had surgery and returned to competition on December 16, 2018. He finished 25th in his first race back.

In the 2018–19 Tour de Ski, Ustiugov won a stage in the 15 km individual freestyle. He finished second overall in the Tour de Ski. He showed a very strong climb performance in the final stage. He also competed at the World Ski Championships but faced health issues.

Facing Illness and Recovery

In October 2020, Ustiugov tested positive for COVID-19 during practice. He slowly recovered and resumed training in early December. He returned to competition in January 2021 at a national event. In his first World Cup race back, Ustiugov and his relay team finished third in Lahti. He also reached the sprint finals three times that season.
