About Alexandria
Alexandria was born on May 18, 2005, in Davis, California. She grew up there before her family moved to New York in 2018. Alexandria is Latina, with Mexican family roots. She hopes to work for the United Nations one day.
Alexandria finished high school in May 2024. She began studying at Harvard University in the fall of 2024.
Why Alexandria Became an Activist
Alexandria's journey as a climate activist began in November 2018. She was visiting her hometown in California during Thanksgiving. A huge wildfire, called the Camp Fire, caused a lot of smoke. This fire was one of the worst in California's history.
Alexandria has asthma, so the smoke made her very sick. While she was recovering, she started learning about climate change. She discovered how rising temperatures made the fire much worse. Her mother, Kristin Hogue, was studying climate science at Columbia University. Alexandria sometimes went to classes with her mom. There, she learned more about the science behind climate change. Soon after, she joined a group of young climate activists in New York called Zero Hour.
Alexandria's Climate Actions
Alexandria was very inspired by Greta Thunberg. Greta gave a speech at a big climate meeting in Poland in December 2018. Since December 14, 2018, Alexandria has skipped school every Friday. She protests outside the Headquarters of the United Nations in New York. She wants leaders to take more action on climate change.
Alexandria is no longer part of the US Youth Climate Strike group. Instead, she started her own group called Earth Uprising. This group focuses on climate change education.
In August 2019, Greta Thunberg sailed across the ocean to New York City. Alexandria, Xiye Bastida, and other young activists were there to greet her. They had already connected with each other online through social media.
In September 2019, Alexandria spoke at the Global Citizen Festival in New York. She shared the stage with Xiye Bastida and Selina Neirok Leem.
In October 2019, she attended a meeting for city mayors in Copenhagen, Denmark. This meeting was about climate action.
In January 2020, she was a youth speaker at the World Economic Forum. This is a big meeting where world leaders discuss important issues. After that, she joined Greta Thunberg for a School strike for climate in Davos, Switzerland.
Earth Uprising: Educating Youth
Alexandria realized that young people needed more support and education about climate change. So, on April 22, 2019, she founded Earth Uprising International.
Earth Uprising is a global group that helps young people learn about climate change. It also encourages them to take action in their own communities. The group works to make change happen from the ground up.
Speaking Up for Change
On August 19, 2020, Alexandria spoke at the Democratic National Convention. This was a major political event in the United States. She spoke about the importance of climate change action.
