All Saints' Church is a special parish church found on the island of Bryher, Isles of Scilly. It belongs to the Church of England. This church is considered a Grade II listed building, which means it is an important historic place.
History of All Saints' Church
Bryher is the most western place in England. This means All Saints' Church is the most western Anglican church in the Canterbury and York areas.
The first time a church on Bryher was officially recorded was in 1742. A Chaplain from St Mary's named Revd Paul Hathaway dedicated a small building. He named it 'God and All Saints'. This first church was about 24 feet long and 13 feet wide. It also served the people living on the nearby island of Samson.
The church is built using strong granite stones. It has a simple rectangular shape. In 1822, a surveyor named Christopher Strick made the church bigger. This allowed it to seat 154 people. More repairs happened in 1832 and 1833, done by Thomas Downing and William Williams.
A tower and a porch were added to the church in 1860. Inside, there is a plain granite font from 1861. More changes and additions were made in 1882. A new chancel (the part of the church near the altar) was added in 1897. In 1930, the church got a new roof, which was 6 feet taller than the old one.
All Saints' Church has been a listed building since 1975. This protects its historical importance. The beautiful stained glass windows were replaced, and this work was finished in 2007. All four windows were made by Oriel Hicks from Phoenix Studio. They show important sayings from Jesus Christ.
Church services are held once a week at All Saints'. The church also hosts special events like weddings and christenings. The first confirmation service ever recorded at the church happened in 2013.
