Allerton's Past: A Quick Look
Allerton has a long history. It was first mentioned in the Domesday Book. This was a very old survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror in 1086. In this book, Allerton was called Alretune. This name meant "the alder enclosure." It came from old English words: alr for "alder tree" and tún for "enclosure" or "village."
In 1894, Allerton became an "urban district." This meant it had its own local government. Later, on November 9, 1913, it became part of the larger city of Liverpool. In recent years, especially in the 2010s, Allerton Road has become very popular. Many new cafes and restaurants have opened there.
