Occupation Artist

Alonzo Clemons (born 1958) is an amazing American sculptor from Boulder, Colorado. He has a very special talent called savant syndrome. This means he has an incredible skill in one area, even though he faces challenges in other areas due to a brain injury he had as a child. Alonzo is famous for being able to sculpt almost any animal perfectly, making it look real and correct in 3D, even if he only sees a picture for a few seconds!

Alonzo's Life Story

Alonzo Clemons was born in Boulder, Colorado, in 1958, and he has lived there his whole life. When he was about three or four years old, Alonzo had a serious brain injury from a fall. This accident caused him to have a developmental disability. This means his brain developed differently, and he learned things at a slower pace. For example, his IQ is around 40, which is like the mental development of a six-year-old.

His mother shared that after the accident, sculpting with clay was the only thing that truly interested him. Because of his injury, it was hard for him to speak much, read, write, drive a car, or even tie his shoes. This meant he would always need help with some daily tasks.

Even with these challenges, Alonzo learned to be quite independent. He lives in his own apartment and studio, which is close to his mother's home. He also improved his social skills and worked part-time at the local YMCA. He even took part in Special Olympics events, showing his strength in powerlifting.

Alonzo is known as an "acquired savant." This means he gained his amazing talent in sculpting after his brain injury. A researcher named Darold Treffert, who studies savant syndrome, called Alonzo a child prodigy. He even said that if Alonzo didn't have his disability, people would see him as a genius because of his incredible artistic skill.

His Amazing Art

Three Frolicking Foals (1987), his first life-sized sculpture, in Itasca, Illinois

Alonzo's talent for sculpting started to show soon after his injury. He began using clay to create different animals. If he didn't have clay, he would use other materials like butter, lard, or even bitumen (a sticky, black substance). He mostly used just his hands to sculpt.

Like other savants, Alonzo didn't need any formal art lessons. He can sculpt any animal he sees, whether it's in person, on TV, or in a photo. He creates incredibly lifelike clay sculptures that can later be made into other materials. Researchers think he can "freeze the frame" of what he sees in his mind and then perfectly recreate it. By 1987, he had already made 500 clay pieces, which filled his entire apartment!

One of the people who showed his art said that Alonzo's ability grew stronger the more he was around animals. Regular visits to the Denver Zoo and local animal farms helped him improve his skills and sculpt even more types of animals. While most of his art is about animals, he has also sculpted people and religious symbols.

Most of Alonzo's sculptures are small and take him less than an hour to make. However, he has also created life-sized sculptures. His first big work, called Three Frolicking Foals, was sold for $45,000 in 1987. Even though it was huge and required him to learn new ways of sculpting, it only took him 15 days to finish! Besides sculpting, he has also started doing pastel drawing.

Alonzo first appeared in public in 1983 on the TV show 60 Minutes on CBS. In May of that same year, he had his first art show at a gallery in Denver, Colorado. There, a sculpture of a bull was sold for $950. For many years, he practiced his art quietly. But then, the 1988 movie Rain Man made many people interested in savant syndrome. After that, Alonzo was featured in many international documentaries and TV shows, like the German documentary Expedition ins Gehirn. This led to more interest in his art, and his sculptures were shown in art museums and exhibitions all over the world.

Alonzo can't really explain how he sculpts or why his talent is mostly about animals. But he believes his ability is a "gift from God." He feels it's not just something he can do, but something he *has* to do—an inner feeling that helps him show how he sees the world. When people ask him how he does it, Alonzo just smiles and points to his head. His assistant has said that working with clay is a very important part of who he is. Alonzo himself has said he would be very unhappy if he couldn't sculpt.
