André Filipe Tavares Gomes (born 30 July 1993) is a Portuguese professional footballer. He plays as a central midfielder for Ligue 1 club Lille.

André Gomes spent three years playing for Benfica. There, he helped the team win three major trophies in the 2013–14 season. In July 2014, he moved to Valencia in Spain. Two years later, he joined Barcelona, another big Spanish club.

After a year on loan at Everton in England, he signed a permanent contract with them in 2019. He then went on loan to Lille for the 2022–23 season. In 2024, he returned to Lille permanently.

Gomes played for Portugal at various youth levels, earning 37 appearances. He also played for the senior national team. He helped Portugal win the Euro 2016 tournament. He also played in the 2017 Confederations Cup.

André Gomes' Football Journey

Early Career at Benfica

André Gomes was born in Grijó, Portugal. He joined Benfica's youth team when he was 18. On 28 July 2012, he played his first game for the main team in a friendly match. He spent his first year as a senior player with Benfica's reserve team. They played in the Segunda Liga, a professional league.

Gomes scored his first goals for Benfica B against Braga B and Belenenses. On 18 October 2012, he made his official debut for the main Benfica team. He came on as a substitute and scored in a 4–0 win in the Taça de Portugal (Portuguese Cup).

His good form continued on 27 October 2012. He started a game and scored in a 3–0 win against Gil Vicente. This was his first game in the Primeira Liga, Portugal's top league. Even so, he mostly played for the B team during this period.

In 2014, Gomes helped Benfica win their first ever "treble." This means they won three major trophies in one season: the league, the Portuguese Cup, and the Taça da Liga (League Cup). He played 23 games that season.

Moving to Valencia

On 17 July 2014, André Gomes joined Valencia in Spain. He moved there on a one-season loan deal. He joined several other Portuguese players and the manager, Nuno Espírito Santo.

Gomes played his first La Liga game on 23 August 2014. He started in a 1–1 draw against Sevilla. He scored his first goal in the league on 22 September. It was the second goal in a 3–0 win against Getafe.

On 12 June 2015, Benfica and Valencia agreed on a permanent transfer for Gomes. He then signed a contract with Valencia until June 2020.

Time at Barcelona

On 21 July 2016, Barcelona reached an agreement to sign Gomes from Valencia. The transfer fee was €35 million, plus extra payments. He made his first game for Barcelona on 17 August. He played the whole game in a 3–0 home win against Sevilla. He helped create two of the goals in that match.

Gomes scored his first goal for Barcelona on 19 March 2017. It was the final goal in a 4–2 home win against his old club, Valencia. He also played an important role in the Copa del Rey final. He came on early in the game and helped set up a goal for Neymar. Barcelona won the cup 3–1.

Playing for Everton

On 9 August 2018, Gomes moved to English club Everton. He joined them on a season-long loan. He made his Premier League debut on 21 October. He played 82 minutes in a 2–0 home win against Crystal Palace. He scored his first goal for Everton on 2 February 2019. This was in a 1–3 home loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Gomes played regularly for Everton during his loan. On 25 June 2019, he signed a permanent five-year contract with the club. The transfer fee was £22 million.

On 3 November 2019, Gomes suffered a serious ankle injury. This happened during a Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur. He had successful surgery and made a full recovery.

He returned to play on 23 February 2020, in a game against Arsenal. In September 2022, he joined French club Lille on a season-long loan. He scored his first goal for Lille on 4 February 2023. This was in a 3–1 win against Rennes.

Gomes played for Everton again on 23 December 2023. He scored a goal in a 2–1 loss to Tottenham. On 17 January, he scored again in an FA Cup game against Crystal Palace. He scored from a free kick to help his team win 1–0. On 17 May 2024, it was announced that Gomes would leave Everton when his contract ended on 30 June.

Return to Lille

On 6 September 2024, André Gomes returned to Lille. He joined them on a free transfer.

International Career for Portugal

André Gomes played for Portugal's under-19 team in the 2012 UEFA European Under-19 Championship. When he was 19, he was called up to the senior national team. This was for a friendly game against Ecuador in February 2013.

On 7 September 2014, Gomes made his full debut for Portugal. He started and played 90 minutes in a 0–1 loss to Albania. This was a qualifying game for UEFA Euro 2016. He was chosen for the squad that played in and won the Euro 2016 tournament in France. He started in their first game, a 1–1 draw with Iceland.

Gomes also played for Portugal in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. He played four games as Portugal finished in third place. He was part of a larger squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, but he did not make the final team. In total, he played 29 games for the senior national team.
