André Filipe Tavares Gomes (born July 30, 1993) is a Portuguese professional footballer. He plays as a central midfielder for the French club Lille.
André Gomes started his senior career at Benfica in Portugal. There, he helped his team win three major trophies in the 2013–14 season. In 2014, he moved to Valencia in Spain. Two years later, he joined Barcelona, another big Spanish club.
After playing for Barcelona, he moved to England to play for Everton. First, he was on loan, and then he signed a permanent contract in 2019. In 2022, he went on loan to Lille in France. He returned to Lille permanently in 2024.
André Gomes has also played for Portugal. He played for various youth teams, earning 37 appearances in total. For the senior national team, he played 29 times. He was part of the team that won the European Championship in 2016. He also helped Portugal finish third in the 2017 Confederations Cup.

André Gomes's Football Journey
Starting at Benfica
André Gomes was born in Grijó, Portugal. He joined the youth academy of Benfica when he was 18 years old. His first game with the main team was a friendly match in July 2012. He spent his first year playing for Benfica's reserve team, Benfica B.
He scored his first goals for Benfica B in league games. In October 2012, he made his official debut for the main Benfica team. He scored a goal in a cup match against Freamunde. A few days later, he scored in his first Primeira Liga game against Gil Vicente.
In January 2014, Benfica sold Gomes's economic rights to a private company. He stayed with the club until the end of the 2013–14 season. That season was very successful for Benfica. André Gomes played 23 games and helped the team win the league, the Portuguese Cup, and the League Cup. This was the first time Benfica won all three trophies in one season!
Playing in Spain: Valencia and Barcelona
Moving to Valencia
In July 2014, André Gomes joined Valencia in Spain on a one-year loan. He made his La Liga debut in August 2014 against Sevilla. His first goal for Valencia came in September against Getafe.
In June 2015, Valencia signed Gomes permanently. He played for the club until 2016.
Time at Barcelona
On July 21, 2016, Barcelona agreed to sign André Gomes from Valencia. He made his first appearance for Barcelona in August 2016. It was a Supercopa de España match against Sevilla, which Barcelona won 3–0.
Gomes scored his first goal for Barcelona in March 2017 against his old club, Valencia. In the Spanish Cup final that year, he came on as a substitute. He played as a right-back and helped set up a goal for Neymar. Barcelona won the cup 3–1.
Joining Everton in England

In August 2018, André Gomes moved to the English club Everton on a loan deal for one season. He made his Premier League debut in October 2018 against Crystal Palace. His first goal for Everton was in February 2019 against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
André Gomes became a regular player for Everton. In June 2019, he signed a permanent five-year contract with the club.
Injury and Recovery
In November 2019, André Gomes suffered a serious ankle injury during a Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur. He had successful surgery and worked hard to recover.
He made his return to playing in February 2020, coming on as a substitute against Arsenal.
Return to Lille
In September 2022, André Gomes joined the French club Lille on a loan deal for the season. He scored his first goal for Lille in February 2023 against Rennes.
After his loan spell, he returned to Everton. In December 2023, he scored a goal for Everton against Tottenham. In January 2024, he scored a winning goal from a free kick in an FA Cup match against Crystal Palace.
On May 17, 2024, it was announced that André Gomes would leave Everton when his contract ended. On September 6, 2024, he returned to Lille on a permanent deal.
Playing for Portugal
André Gomes played for Portugal's youth teams, including the under-19 team at the 2012 UEFA European Under-19 Championship. When he was 19, he was called up to the senior team for the first time in February 2013.
He made his full debut for Portugal on September 7, 2014, in a qualifying match for the European Championship. He was chosen to be part of the squad for Euro 2016 in France. Portugal went on to win the tournament! Gomes started in their first game against Iceland.
Gomes also played for Portugal in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. Portugal finished in third place in that tournament. In total, he played 29 games for the senior national team.
