Rubin Andre Carter (born May 12, 1979) is an American football coach and former player. He played as a defensive end in the National Football League (NFL). Andre played college football for the California Golden Bears. He was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2001 NFL draft. He also played for the Washington Redskins, New England Patriots, and Oakland Raiders. Andre Carter is currently a coach for the Las Vegas Raiders.

Andre Carter's Early Life

Andre Carter was born in Denver, Colorado. He went to Oak Grove High School in San Jose, California. In his final year of high school, he was named an All-America player by USA Today. He was also the Gatorade California Player of the Year. Parade magazine called him the top defensive lineman.

College Football Career

Carter attended the University of California, Berkeley. He played for the California Golden Bears from 1997 to 2000. During his junior and senior years, he was a top player in the Pac-10 conference. In 2000, he won the Morris Trophy. This award goes to the best defensive lineman in the Pac-10. He was also named a unanimous All-American. This means all major groups agreed he was one of the best players in the country. The Golden Bears also named him their most valuable player.

Andre Carter's NFL Journey

Andre Carter was picked by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the 2001 NFL draft. He was the seventh player chosen overall.

Playing for the San Francisco 49ers

Carter played for the 49ers from 2001 to 2005. The team changed its defense in 2005. This meant Carter moved to play as an outside linebacker. During his time with the 49ers, he made 154 solo tackles. He also had 32 sacks, which means he tackled the opposing quarterback.

Time with the Washington Redskins

In 2006, Carter signed with the Washington Redskins. The Redskins moved him back to defensive end. This was his natural position. In his first year, he had 56 tackles and six sacks. He played even better in 2007. That year, he had 55 tackles and 10.5 sacks. He also forced four fumbles. His best season with the Redskins was in 2009. He had 11 sacks that year.

In 2010, the Redskins got a new coach. The team changed its defense again. Carter had to play outside linebacker, which he found difficult. The Redskins released him in 2011.

Joining the New England Patriots

On August 7, 2011, Andre Carter announced he would play for the New England Patriots. He signed a one-year deal with the team. On November 13, 2011, Carter had an amazing game. He recorded 4 sacks against the New York Jets. This tied the Patriots' record for most sacks in a single game.

Later that season, in December 2011, Carter got injured. He tore a tendon in his leg. This injury made him miss the rest of the season and the playoffs. Even though he was injured, Carter was chosen for the 2012 Pro Bowl. This is a special game for the best players in the NFL.

Playing for the Oakland Raiders

Carter returned to the Patriots on October 22, 2013. He was brought back to help the team's defense. The Patriots had lost some key players to injuries that season.

Coaching Career

After his playing career, Andre Carter became a coach. In August 2015, he went back to the University of California. He worked there as an assistant coach.

In February 2017, the Miami Dolphins hired Carter. He became an assistant defensive line coach. When the Dolphins' coach, Adam Gase, moved to the New York Jets, Carter went with him. He became the Jets' defensive line coach.

In 2021, Carter became the defensive line coach at Louisiana State University (LSU).

As of 2024, Carter is a pass rush specialist for the Las Vegas Raiders. He works under head coach Antonio Pierce.

Personal Life

Andre Carter is the son of Rubin Carter. His father was also an NFL player for the Denver Broncos. Andre is married to Bethany. They have two children: a stepdaughter named Aysha, and a son named Quincy. His middle name, Andre, was given to him by his father. It honors his father's friend and teammate, Andre Townsend.
