Anthony has a desert climate. This means it's very dry. The temperature can change a lot between day and night. This is because of its higher elevation and dry air.

Leap Year Capital of the World

Every leap year, Anthony, Texas, and Anthony, New Mexico, hold a special celebration. They have a parade and a festival for people born on Leap Day.

Why Anthony is the Leap Year Capital

In 1988, a local resident named Mary Ann Brown had an idea. She was born on February 29th, Leap Day. She suggested that the Anthony Chamber of Commerce host a festival. Since no other place regularly celebrates Leap Day like this, the towns of Anthony, Texas, and Anthony, New Mexico, were declared the "Leap Year Capitals of the World."

The governors of New Mexico and Texas supported this idea. A United States Senator even asked Congress to make it official. In 1996, the Anthony, New Mexico, post office became "Leap Year Station." They even have a special stamp for mail on Leap Day. The mayor of Anthony, Texas, helps organize the festival and parade.

Worldwide Leap Year Birthday Club

This club is for people born on February 29th. It started in 1988 with no members. By 1996, it had almost 300 members. In 2004, there were over 400 members! People from all over the world, even Europe, have traveled to Anthony to celebrate their special birthday.
