The Appalachian Gap is a special mountain pass located in the Green Mountains of Vermont. It is a low point between two mountains. This gap helps people and water move across the mountains.

The highest part of the pass is in Chittenden County. It is about 0.2 kilometers (0.12 miles) west of the border with Washington County. The pass is also part of the beautiful Camel's Hump State Park.

What is Appalachian Gap?

Appalachian Gap is a natural opening in the Green Mountains. It sits at an elevation of 724 meters (2,375 feet). This makes it a significant landmark in Vermont. State Route 17 crosses right through the gap.

Where Does the Water Go?

Water flows in different directions from Appalachian Gap. On the east side, Mill Brook flows away from the gap. This brook joins the Mad River. The Mad River then flows into the Winooski River. Finally, the Winooski River empties into Lake Champlain.

On the west side, Beaver Meadow Brook drains the gap. This brook flows into the Huntington River. The Huntington River is another stream that feeds into the Winooski River. Lake Champlain's water eventually flows into the Richelieu River in Quebec, Canada. From there, it reaches the Saint Lawrence River and then the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

Fun Things to Do at Appalachian Gap

Appalachian Gap is a very popular spot for visitors. The Long Trail crosses right over the gap. This famous hiking trail is 272 miles long and runs through all of Vermont. Hikers can enjoy amazing views from the trail.

The gap offers stunning views of the Champlain Valley. You can also see Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains in the distance. It is a favorite place for people who ride motorcycles and road bikes. The road leading up to the gap is quite steep. Some parts have a slope of more than 15 percent!

The summit of Appalachian Gap is also a finish line. It is used for a road race stage in the annual Green Mountain Stage Race. This makes it an exciting place for athletes.

Skiing Near the Gap

The Mad River Glen ski area is very close to Appalachian Gap. It is located just south of the gap. You can find it on the east side of Stark Mountain.
