History of Ardleigh

Ardleigh is mentioned in the Domesday Book from 1086. This was a very old survey of land in England. The book says that a person named Geoffrey de Mandeville owned Ardleigh at that time.

After the First World War, many small farms were started in the Ardleigh area. These were called smallholdings. They were set up by a group called the Land Settlement Association. This group helped soldiers get land to farm after the war.

Even though a main railway line, the Great Eastern Main Line, goes near the village, Ardleigh used to have its own train station. However, the station closed in November 1967.
