Auswil is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. It's part of the Oberaargau district.

Auswil's Past: A Look at Its History

Auswil was first mentioned in old writings around the years 855-860. Back then, it was known as Ouvistwilare.

Forts and Knights in Auswil's Early Days

During the Middle Ages, a fort on the Rohrbachberg hill protected the villages. Around the year 1300, this fort was home to a family of Ministerialis. These were like unfree knights who served powerful lords, in this case, the Kyburg family.

In 1318 or 1323, the city of Bern destroyed this fort. Over many years, from the 800s to the 1300s, Auswil slowly became part of the Abbey of St. Gall. Under the Abbey, Auswil was part of the larger area of Rohrbach.

Becoming an Independent Town

Auswil started to act as its own independent municipality in the 1800s. The first school in Auswil opened in 1826. However, the nearby community of Rohrbachberg still sent its children to the Rohrbach school. Even today, farming is a very important part of Auswil's economy. Almost half of all jobs are in agriculture.
