The Azerbaijani Navy is like the country's water police and defense force. They make sure the Caspian Sea is safe near Azerbaijan. They also protect the country from threats coming from the sea.
The story of the Azerbaijani Navy goes back a long time. Their first navy was formed on June 26, 1918. This happened when the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic became independent after the Russian Empire collapsed.
Later, after the Soviet Union broke apart in 1991, Azerbaijan became independent again. The modern Azerbaijani Navy was then created. It was formed from parts of the former Soviet Navy that were in Azerbaijan.
The Azerbaijani Navy has about 5,000 military members. They are organized into sixteen different groups. These groups include the main Caspian Sea fleet and a special coast guard unit. The coast guard helps protect the country's borders on the water.
The navy uses many different types of ships:
- They have a large ship called a frigate (a type of warship).
- There are also 7 patrol boats. These are smaller, faster boats used for patrolling and guarding.
- The navy has 7 minesweepers. These ships are very important because they find and remove dangerous mines from the water.
- They also have 6 landing craft. These are special ships that can carry soldiers and equipment and drop them right onto a coast.
- There are 2 smaller landing cutters, which are like patrol boats that can also land on the coast.
- Finally, the navy has 1 special purpose warship and 1 special purpose cutter. These are used for specific missions.
