Club Balonmano Sagunto was a famous Spanish women's handball team. It was based in Sagunto. The club started in 1978. In July 2012, it moved to Valencia. It then joined another club, CE Handbol Marítim. They played together in the top league as Valencia Aicequip.

History of the Club

The club first began in 1963. It was a women's handball team in Valencia. Back then, it was called Medina Valencia. In 1978, it became its own club. Its new name was Íber Valencia. Later, in 1993, the club changed its name again. It became Mar Valencia.

Name Changes and Moves

Over the years, the club had other names too. These names came from sponsors. Some names were El Osito L'Eliana and Milar L'Eliana. This happened when the team moved to L'Eliana.

Dominating Spanish Handball

The team, known as Íber/Mar, was very strong. They were the best in Spain in the 1980s and 1990s. They won a record 20 national leagues in a row. This winning streak lasted from 1979 to 1998. They also won 19 national cups. These wins happened between 1981 and 2000.

European Success

In 1997, the club made history. It became the first Spanish team to win the Champions League. They beat Viborg HK in the final match. The team reached the Champions League final again the next year. However, they lost to Hypo Niederösterreich.

Continued Achievements

After these big wins, the club was still very successful. They won the Cup Winners' Cup in 2000. They beat Kuban Krasnodar in that final. In 2003, they reached their third Champions League final. They lost this one to Krim Ljubljana.

Moving to Sagunto

In 2004, the club moved again. This time, it moved from L'Eliana to Sagunto. Its name changed to Balonmano Sagunto. It was also known as Astroc Sagunto (2004–07) and Parc Sagunto (2007–11). These names were also from sponsors.

In 2005, the team won its last league title. In 2006, they reached the Champions League semifinals. Balonmano Sagunto remained one of the top three teams in the league. Their main success after 2006 was winning the Spanish Cup in 2008. This cup is called the Copa de la Reina.

The End of the Club

In July 2012, the club faced a challenge. They did not have enough sponsors. So, they moved back to Valencia. They joined a new club called CE Handbol Marítim. This new club became their successor.
