Bardsley is a lively suburban area located in Oldham, Greater Manchester, England. It sits on gently rolling hills near the River Medlock. Bardsley is right on Oldham's southern edge, bordering Ashton-under-Lyne in the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside.

Discovering Bardsley's Past

The name Bardsley has a cool history! It comes from very old words. The first part, "Bardsley," comes from an Anglo-Saxon name, "Beornraëd." The second part, "leah," means "wood clearing." So, Bardsley means "a woodland clearing belonging to a man named Beornraëd."

How Bardsley is Governed

Bardsley has been part of Lancashire for a very long time. In the past, it was a small village, or "hamlet," within the larger area of Ashton-under-Lyne.

Over the years, how Bardsley is governed has changed. In 1894, Bardsley became its own "civil parish." This was a local area with its own council. It was part of the Limehurst Rural District.

Later, in the 1950s, Bardsley grew bigger. Parts of it joined the nearby County Borough of Oldham. By 1954, the Limehurst Rural District was gone. The rest of Bardsley also became part of Oldham.

Then, in 1972, a big change happened. The County Borough of Oldham was replaced. Bardsley became part of the new Metropolitan Borough of Oldham in Greater Manchester. This is how it is governed today.
