Hollinwood is a place in Greater Manchester, England. It is also an area that elects local representatives, called an electoral ward. In 2011, about 10,920 people lived here.

Hollinwood is located southwest of Oldham. It is very close to the towns of Chadderton and Failsworth. A major road, the A62 road, cuts through it. It is also near Junction 22 of the M60 motorway.

History of Hollinwood

Heron Mill, Oldham

Long ago, Hollinwood was part of Lancashire. Before factories were common, it was a large open area, like a moor, between Chadderton and Oldham. For a while, the towns argued over who owned this land. But in 1713, a court decided that Hollinwood Moor belonged to Oldham.

In the mid-1700s, Hollinwood started to grow into a village. By the mid-1800s, it was described as a large village. Later, in 1880, more land was exchanged between Oldham and Chadderton in this area.

Many factories, called mills, were built where the moor used to be. These included Heron, Fox, Asia, Wharf, Richmond, and Park mills. Today, the Chapel Road playing fields are one of the few open spaces left. These fields are on the site of an old reservoir that once served a canal.

Roxy Cinema
The Roxy Cinema was taken down in 2007.

Hollinwood has a long history as a place with many factories. Today, it is home to the Northern Counties Housing Association. It also has Mirror Colour Print Ltd, a large printing company. This company prints many newspapers and employs hundreds of people.

In the past, many people in Hollinwood worked in Oldham's cotton mills. Others were miners in the large coal mines nearby. Hollinwood grew a lot because of the Ferranti factory. This factory made large power transformers. Later, it made special trucks for lifting containers. The building where the transformers were made is now used for printing newspapers. Another older Ferranti factory made electricity meters. This factory was later sold and then closed.

Hollinwood also had a popular cinema called the Roxy. It closed in 2005 and was taken down in 2007. In total, Hollinwood once had five cinemas: La Scala, Gem, Queens, Regal, and Roxy.

How Hollinwood is Governed

Hollinwood used to be a small church area, or chapelry. It was part of the larger church area of Prestwich-cum-Oldham. The main church, St. Margaret of Antioch, is still connected to the Rector of Prestwich.

Before 1974, some of Hollinwood was part of Chadderton. After a big change in local government, this area was split. Now, it is part of the Hollinwood and South Chadderton wards.

Hollinwood is part of the larger Metropolitan Borough of Oldham. This means it is governed by the Oldham Council. After the local elections in 2023, the Hollinwood ward is represented by three Conservative Party councillors. These councillors help make decisions for the local area.

The borders of the Hollinwood ward changed in 2003. Some parts moved to Failsworth East ward. Other parts from Oldham St Paul's ward joined Hollinwood. The ward now includes Hollinwood itself, plus nearby areas like Hollins, Garden Suburb, and Limeside.

Hollinwood is also part of the Oldham West and Royton area for national elections. This area elects a Member of Parliament (MP) to the UK Parliament.

Geography and Landscape

Hollinwood is located in an area that faces some economic challenges. It is among the 5% of areas in the United Kingdom with the most economic difficulties.

The Hollinwood Branch Canal used to run through this area. However, the last parts of the canal in Hollinwood were removed when the M60 motorway was built. Any remaining parts of this canal are now outside Hollinwood.

The M60 motorway, which was finished in 2000, greatly changed Hollinwood. It passes to the south of Manchester. Recently, new buildings are being constructed. These include the Byron Apartment Block and plans for new houses.

Places of Worship

St Margaret of Antioch Church

Before 1760, people in Hollinwood had to travel to Oldham St Mary's for church services. As Hollinwood grew into a village in the mid-1700s, a new church was needed. The church, named St. Margaret of Antioch, was finished by 1768. It was officially opened in 1769. The first building was smaller and did not have a tower. The current church building dates from 1877, and a tower was added in 1904.

In recent years, the church has been repaired and restored. Money from groups like English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund helped fix the tower and the church roofs.

Other Churches in Hollinwood

Many other churches were built in Hollinwood in the late 1800s. Some of these have now closed.

  • Beulah (Baptist), on Withins Road, started in 1891 and is still open today.
  • Holy Family (Roman Catholic), on Roman Road, started in 1958 and is still open.
  • Hollins (Methodist), on Millgate, started in 1840 and was still open in 2015.

The area has a tram stop called Hollinwood tram stop. This is part of the Manchester Metrolink system. Trams run regularly between East Didsbury and Rochdale. Before the tram, Hollinwood had a railway station. This station was part of the Oldham Loop Line, which closed in 2009. The line was then changed for trams and reopened in 2012.

Famous People from Hollinwood

  • Henry Taylor was born in Hollinwood. He was a British Olympic freestyle swimming champion.
  • Hannah Beswick (who died in 1785) was from Hollinwood. She was very afraid of being buried alive. Because of this fear, her will said her body should be kept above ground. Once a year, people had to check her face for any signs of life. This unusual request made her famous. Her preserved body was later given to the Manchester Museum and was known as the Manchester Mummy.
