Barguna is a district located in the southwestern part of Bangladesh. It is part of the Barisal Division. This area covers about 1,831 square kilometers. Barguna is surrounded by several other districts. To the north, you'll find Jhalokati, Barisal, Pirojpur, and Patuakhali. The Patuakhali District also borders Barguna to the east. To the south, Barguna meets the Bay of Bengal, a large body of water. On its western side, it shares borders with Pirojpur and Bagerhat districts. Important rivers like the Payra, Bishkhali, and Baleshwar flow through this district.
Understanding Barguna's Government
Barguna is organized into smaller areas called upazilas, which are like sub-districts. There are 6 of these upazilas in Barguna:
- Amtali Upazila
- Taltoli Upazila
- Bamna Upazila
- Barguna Sadar Upazila
- Betagi Upazila
- Patharghata Upazila
Within these upazilas, there are 38 union parishads (local councils), 238 mouzas (groups of villages), and 560 villages. Barguna also has four main towns, called municipalities. These municipalities are divided into 44 wards and 49 mahallas (neighborhoods).
The biggest town in the district is Barguna Town. It covers an area of about 15.57 square kilometers. This town is split into 9 wards and 19 mahallas.
Who Lives in Barguna?
In 2007, the total number of people living in Barguna District was about 902,465. More than half of the population, 50.12%, were females, while males made up 49.88%. Most of the people in Barguna, about 91.01%, are Muslim. About 8.69% are Hindu, 0.04% are Christian, and 0.24% are Buddhist. A very small number, 0.02%, follow other religions.
