Barney's Family
Barney's mother was named Coors. She belonged to Christine Todd Whitman, who used to be a governor and worked for the government. Barney's father was named Kelly.
Barney had a niece named Miss Beazley. She was also a Scottish Terrier and lived with the Bush family. Miss Beazley was Barney's niece through his half-brother, Clinton.
Barney's Hobbies

Barney loved to play with balls, especially volleyballs and golf balls. He also enjoyed watching people play horseshoes.
Barney was quite famous! He starred in special Christmas videos made by the White House staff every year when the Bushes were in office. These videos were called "Barneycam" and often featured both Barney and his niece, Miss Beazley. You can still find these fun videos on the archived George W. Bush White House website.
Barney in the News

Barney often got attention from the media. He was a well-known pet and sometimes even mentioned in serious discussions.
Funny Stories About Barney
Sometimes, Barney was featured in funny or satirical stories. For example, a newspaper called The Onion once wrote a pretend story about Barney visiting soldiers. He was also featured in funny segments on TV shows like The Daily Show.
Barney's Bites

Barney was usually a friendly dog, but sometimes he would nip. In 2008, he bit a news reporter's finger. He also nipped a public relations director on the wrist. Laura Bush's spokesperson joked that Barney was just saying he was "done with the paparazzi" (people who take lots of pictures).
Barney's Later Life
Barney passed away on February 1, 2013. He had a serious illness called lymphoma, which is a type of cancer, and was put to sleep to prevent further suffering.
President George W. Bush shared a message on his Facebook page about how much he loved Barney. Barney's niece, Miss Beazley, continued to live with the Bush family until she also passed away in 2014.
Today, you can find statues honoring Barney and Miss Beazley. There's a bronze sculpture of them at the George W. Bush Library. There's also a bronze statue of Barney with President Bush in Rapid City, South Dakota.
