Ben 10: Protector of Earth is an exciting video game based on the popular animated TV show Ben 10. This was the very first Ben 10 game ever released! It came out in late 2007 for several gaming systems: the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, and Wii.
Gameplay Adventures
In Ben 10: Protector of Earth, you play as Ben Tennyson. Your mission is to travel across five different regions in the United States. You need to find and get back all the special alien DNA samples that were stolen from Ben's Omnitrix. A supervillain named Vilgax wants to use them to destroy the world!
Each level in the game has puzzles you need to solve. You'll also face waves of enemies that you must fight to move forward. Ben uses his amazing Omnitrix to transform into different alien forms. Each alien has unique powers that are useful for fighting bad guys or solving tricky puzzles.
At the start, Ben can only change into a few aliens for a short time. But as you defeat powerful bosses, you'll unlock more aliens. Eventually, you can use five of Ben's ten forms: Four Arms, Heatblast, XLR8, Cannonbolt, and Wildvine. You'll even unlock "master control." This means Ben can stay an alien forever or switch between them without the Omnitrix running out of power.
You can also unlock cool new attack moves. Just collect special Omnitrix points as you play. Sometimes, you'll find temporary power-ups. These can make you stronger or even invincible for a short time. There are also bonuses that help the Omnitrix recharge faster. Look for three hidden Sumo Slammer cards in each main level. Collecting them unlocks fun extras, like movie clips from the show!
After you finish a level, you get a "Plumber rank." This rank depends on how quickly you beat the level. If you get an "A" rank, you'll unlock a view of a character, usually a boss or a villain. In levels with big bosses, you might see a "quick time event". This is when you quickly press buttons on screen to perform a special, powerful attack.
Different Ways to Play
The game was made by different developers for different systems. The versions for Wii, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable are very similar. They all let you play in 3D environments. A second player can even join in for a co-op mode!
The Wii version uses special motion controls. You can flick the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to attack. You also point the Wii Remote at the screen for those quick-time events. For the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable versions, you need memory cards to save your progress.
The Nintendo DS version is quite different. It's a side-scrolling game, which means you mostly move left and right. It's a 2.5D beat 'em up style. On the DS, you use the touchscreen to pick and switch between Ben's alien forms.
The Story So Far
The adventure begins when a mosquito-like drone steals most of the alien DNA from Ben's Omnitrix. This happens while Ben is sleeping near the Grand Canyon. A giant object crashes nearby, and Ben discovers he can only turn into Heatblast and Four Arms. After fighting many drones, he defeats a huge Mech Drone. He finds an Omnitrix Crystal, which lets him transform into XLR8 again!
Later, Ben, Gwen, and Grandpa Max go to Mesa Verde. They find Vilgax's Drones fighting the Forever Knights. After Ben defeats them all, an injured Forever Knight tells them that Enoch has used technology from Area 51. Enoch built a giant Battlebot to fight Ben. They figure out the Battlebot would be strong near water. Gwen thinks of the Hoover Dam. They head there and defeat the Battle-Bot. Ben finds another Omnitrix Crystal, getting Cannonbolt back!
Next, the Tennysons plan a vacation in San Francisco. But they find out that Kevin 11 has escaped from the Null Void! He's brought strange plant creatures with him. Kevin kidnaps Grandpa Max, but Ben defeats him at a Lumber Mill. Kevin then gets sucked back into the Null Void. After fighting through Crater Lake, they go to the Space Needle. This is where the mother plant (Wildvine's DNA) has made its home and is infecting the city. Ben defeats it and finds an Omnitrix Crystal. This gives him access to Wildvine, the last alien to unlock in the game!
Meanwhile, in outer space, Vilgax and Zs'Skayr are working together to get the Omnitrix. Ben, Gwen, and Grandpa Max go camping at Effigy Mounds. They find some of Zs'Skayr's troops hunting there. After Ben defeats Hex, they learn that Zs'Skayr raided the Plumber Base in Mount Rushmore. Ben chases Zs'Skayr through the Chicago lakefront. He finally defeats him in the Gold Coast Theater. Grandpa Max then sucks Zs'Skayr into the Null Void.
After Zs'Skayr is gone, they go to a Historic Battlefield. There, Doctor Animo kidnaps Gwen! Ben and Max go to the Bayou and find Clancy in an old mansion. After Ben defeats Clancy, Max asks where Animo took Gwen. Clancy says it's too late and Animo will turn Gwen into a mutant. Ben and Grandpa travel to New Orleans. They take a boat to Animo's oil refinery. After defeating Animo, Gwen tells them that Animo and Vilgax planned to pull Earth into the Null Void. Ben then unlocks Master Control for the Omnitrix!
Finally, they arrive in Washington, D.C., where Null Void Portals are appearing everywhere. Ben defeats Sixsix and his troops in Cape Canaveral. Grandpa Max uses rockets found there to make the Rustbucket spaceship-ready. They fly to Vilgax's Ship. Ben fights a big battle against Vilgax and defeats him. Ben finds the rest of the Omnitrix Crystals on the ship. But the ship starts to break down and creates a Null Void Portal. Vilgax and his ship are sucked in! Luckily, Ben, Gwen, and Grandpa Max escape just in time. They get back to their vacation!
Vilgax doesn't show up again until the third game in the series, Vilgax Attacks.
