Benedikt Höwedes (born 29 February 1988) is a German former professional footballer. He played as a defender. He spent most of his career playing for Schalke 04. He was the team's captain for six seasons.
Benedikt also played for the Germany national football team from 2011 to 2017. He won the World Cup with Germany in 2014. He was one of only three players who played every minute of that tournament. Höwedes could play in the middle of the defense or as a left or right full-back.

Club Career
Starting Out at Schalke
Benedikt Höwedes began playing football for his local team, TuS Haltern, in 1994. In 2001, he joined the youth teams of FC Schalke 04. By 2003, he became the captain of Schalke's under-19 team. With this team, he won the Under 19 Bundesliga in 2006.
In September 2007, the German Football Association gave Höwedes the Fritz Walter Medal. This award is for the best young player in his age group.
He signed his first professional contract with Schalke in January 2007. He joined Schalke's main team in July. His first professional game was in the Champions League on 3 October 2007.
On 23 July 2011, Höwedes became the captain of Schalke. He played for the club for many years. In May 2016, he was even featured as a minifigure in a special Lego collection about German footballers!
Playing for Juventus
On 30 August 2017, Höwedes joined Juventus in Italy for one year. He played his first game for Juventus on 26 November. On 15 April 2018, he scored his first goal for the team. However, he had many injuries during his time in Italy.
Moving to Lokomotiv Moscow
On 29 July 2018, Höwedes moved from Schalke to Lokomotiv Moscow in Russia. He signed a four-year contract. On 7 October 2018, he scored his first goal for Lokomotiv. It was a late goal that gave his team a 1–0 win.
On 8 June 2020, he left Lokomotiv Moscow. He decided to return to Germany for family reasons.
Retirement from Football
On 31 July 2020, Benedikt Höwedes announced he was retiring from professional football. He had played over 275 top-level games in Germany, Italy, and Russia.
International Career
Benedikt Höwedes played for Germany's under-18 and under-19 teams. He played in all matches up to the semi-final at the 2007 UEFA European Under-19 Championship. He also played for the under-21 team.
He was part of the squad that won the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. Germany beat England 4–0 in the final.
On 29 May 2011, he played his first game for the senior national team. This was in a friendly match against Uruguay. On 7 June 2011, he played his first official match. Germany won 3–1 against Azerbaijan. Höwedes helped set up the first goal.
Höwedes was chosen for the German team for UEFA Euro 2012. He did not play in that tournament. On 15 August 2012, he scored his first goal for the national team.
He was part of Germany's team for the 2014 World Cup. He played as a left-back in the first match against Portugal. His team went on to win the tournament! In the final, Höwedes almost scored with a header. He was one of only three German players to play every minute of all seven World Cup games.
He played his last game for Germany in March 2017. Benedikt Höwedes played 44 times for the German national team.
Managerial Career
In August 2021, it was announced that Höwedes would start a training program. This program involves tasks for the Germany national football team's management. It is part of his UEFA master's degree. The program is set to last until the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Style of Play
Benedikt Höwedes was a strong and reliable defender. He could play in many different defensive positions. His main position was in the middle of the defense. But he could also play as a full-back on either the right or left side.
When he was younger, Höwedes often played as a defensive midfielder. But when he became a professional, he mostly played as a left-back. He was very good at winning one-on-one battles against other players. He was also excellent at heading the ball. His height and jumping ability made him a threat in the air. He could score goals and set them up with his head. Höwedes was also known for his well-timed sliding tackles and strong standing tackles. He had good passing skills, technique, and physical strength.

Personal Life
Benedikt Höwedes was born in Haltern, Germany. He went to Gesamtschule Berger Feld for school.
He is married to Lisa Wesseler. They have one son named Bas, who was born in October 2018.
