Benedikt Höwedes (born 29 February 1988) is a German former professional footballer. He played as a defender. He spent most of his career with Schalke 04. He was the team's captain for six seasons.
Höwedes also played for the Germany national football team from 2011 to 2017. He won the World Cup with Germany in 2014. He was one of only three players to play every minute of that tournament. Höwedes could play in the centre or as a left or right full-back. He called himself a 'multi-functional player' in defense.

Benedikt Höwedes' Football Journey
Starting at Schalke 04
Benedikt Höwedes began playing football in 1994. He joined his hometown club, TuS Haltern. In 2001, he moved to the youth teams of FC Schalke 04. By 2003, he became captain of Schalke's under-19 team. They won the Under 19 Bundesliga in 2006.
In September 2007, the German Football Association gave Höwedes the Fritz Walter Medal. This award recognized him as the best player in his age group for the 2006–07 season.
Höwedes signed his first professional contract with Schalke in January 2007. He joined Schalke's main Bundesliga team in July. Before that, he played for Schalke's second team. His first professional match was in the Champions League on 3 October 2007.
He extended his contract with Schalke several times. On 23 July 2011, Höwedes became the captain of Schalke. He stayed with the club until 2017. In May 2016, Höwedes was even featured as a collectible minifigure. This was part of a special collaboration.
Playing for Juventus (on loan)
On 30 August 2017, Höwedes joined Juventus in Italy. It was a one-year loan deal. He made his Serie A and Juventus debut on 26 November. This was in a 3–0 home win against Crotone.
On 15 April 2018, he scored his first goal for Juventus. It was in a 3–0 home win over Sampdoria. He played only a few games for Juventus. His time there was affected by many injuries.
Moving to Lokomotiv Moscow
Höwedes left Schalke on 29 July 2018. He joined Lokomotiv Moscow in Russia. He signed a four-year contract on 31 July 2018. On 7 October 2018, he scored his first goal for Lokomotiv. It was a late goal that gave his team a 1–0 victory.
On 8 June 2020, his contract with Lokomotiv ended. He decided to return to Germany for family reasons.
Retiring from Football
On 31 July 2020, Benedikt Höwedes announced he was retiring. He had played more than 275 top-level matches. These games were in Germany, Italy, and Russia.
Benedikt Höwedes' International Career

Höwedes played for Germany's youth teams. He was part of the under-18 and under-19 squads. He played in all matches up to the semi-final at the 2007 UEFA European Under-19 Championship. He also played for the under-21 team.
He was part of the squad that won the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. Germany won 4–0 against England in the final.
On 29 May 2011, he played his first game for the senior team. This was in a friendly match against Uruguay. On 7 June 2011, he played his first official match. Germany won 3–1 against Azerbaijan. Höwedes helped set up the first goal.
Höwedes was chosen for the German squad for UEFA Euro 2012. However, he did not play in the tournament. On 15 August 2012, he scored his first goal for the senior team. It was in a friendly game against Argentina.
He was named in Germany's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He started as a left-back in the first match against Portugal. Germany went on to win the tournament. In the 2014 World Cup final, Höwedes almost scored. His header hit the goalpost just before halftime. He was one of only three German players to play every minute of all seven World Cup games. The others were goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and captain Philipp Lahm.
