The Name of Bilgola Plateau

The area we now call Bilgola Plateau used to have a different name. It was once known as Mount Loftus. This name was given after a governor of New South Wales, Lord Augustus Loftus.

However, because the area is more of a flat, elevated landform rather than a pointy mountain, it was decided that "plateau" was a better description. The name "Bilgola" comes from an Aboriginal language. It means "swirling water," which probably describes the waves at Bilgola Beach nearby.
