Blaye (which sounds like Blaia in the local Occitan language) is a small town in southwestern France. It is located in the Gironde area, which is part of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Blaye is special because it is one of the five "sub-prefectures" in its department. This means it's an important administrative center for the surrounding smaller towns and villages.

Where is Blaye?

Blaye is located on the right side of the Gironde estuary. An estuary is where a river meets the sea, and here it's about 3 kilometers (almost 2 miles) wide! The town is about 56 kilometers (35 miles) southeast of a bigger city called Bordeaux.

The town itself covers an area of about 6.4 square kilometers (2.5 square miles). Its average height above sea level is 21 meters (about 69 feet). The town hall, which is like the main office for the town, is 8 meters (26 feet) above sea level.

How Blaye is Governed

Blaye is an important administrative center. It is a "sub-prefecture" of the Gironde department. This means it's a key city for managing a part of the larger region. It is also the main town of the "arrondissement" of Blaye. An arrondissement is like a district within a department.

Blaye is also the "chef-lieu" (which means administrative center) of the "canton" of L'Estuaire. A canton is a smaller administrative area, and this one had 41,046 people in 2014.

The town is part of a group of towns called an "intercommunality" (Communauté de communes de Blaye). This group works together on things like local services and projects.

Sister Cities

Blaye has "twin towns" or "sister cities" in other countries. This means they have special friendly relationships and often exchange visits. Blaye is twinned with:
