What is Blepharoneuron?
Blepharoneuron is a scientific name. It refers to a specific genus of grasses. A genus is like a small family of very similar plants. These grasses are known for their unique features. They are often found in dry, open areas.
The Grass Family
All Blepharoneuron plants are part of the Poaceae family. This is also called the grass family. It is one of the largest plant families. Grasses are very important. They provide food for animals and humans. Think of corn, wheat, and rice. They are all grasses!
Where Do These Grasses Grow?
Blepharoneuron grasses are native to North America. This means they naturally grow there. You can find them in both the United States and Mexico.
Blepharoneuron in the United States
One type, Blepharoneuron tricholepis, grows in several US states. These include Colorado, Arizona, California, Utah, New Mexico, and Texas. These states often have dry climates. This is where these grasses thrive.
Blepharoneuron in Mexico
Both known species of Blepharoneuron grow in Mexico.
- Blepharoneuron shepherdii is found in northern Mexico. You can see it in states like Chihuahua, Durango, Sonora, and Zacatecas.
- Blepharoneuron tricholepis also grows in northern and central Mexico.
Types of Blepharoneuron
Currently, scientists recognize two main types, or species, of Blepharoneuron.
- Blepharoneuron shepherdii: This species was first described by Vasey. Later, P.M. Peterson and Annable gave it its current name. It is found only in northern Mexico.
- Blepharoneuron tricholepis: This species was first described by Torr. Then, Nash gave it its current name. It is found in both the United States and Mexico. This makes it more widespread.
These grasses are often called "bunchgrasses." This means they grow in clumps or bunches. They do not spread out like a lawn. This growth pattern helps them survive in dry places.
