Boohbah is a British children's television series. It was created by Anne Wood and produced by Ragdoll Productions. Alan Dapre and Robin Stevens wrote the scripts for the show. Anne Wood also created the famous show Teletubbies.

The programme was made for young children, usually between three and six years old. Its main goal is to be an exercise show. It also aims to be silly and make children think. The show is similar to Teletubbies because both have a science fiction theme. The Boohbahs are five furry, round creatures. They are meant to be like tiny atoms of energy.

There are 104 episodes in total. Each episode lasts for 25 minutes. In the United Kingdom, the show first aired on 14 April 2003 on ITV. It was split into two series, each with 52 episodes. The second series started on 16 March 2004.

In the United States, the programme began on 5 January 2004 on PBS. All 104 episodes were shown as one series in the U.S. The last episode was shown on 17 September 2006. Boohbah is also shown in the Netherlands on Nick Jr.. The word "Boohbah" means "doll" in Hebrew. However, it is not known if the show was named after this.

Characters

The series focuses on the Boohbahs. These are five plump, fuzzy, round, gumdrop-shaped creatures. Actors wear full-body costumes to play them. Their fur sparkles with tiny lights, and they have big eyes. Their eyebrows are also made of rows of lights. The Boohbahs do not speak. Instead, they make noises like squeaks, squeals, "poofs," and clicks. The Boohbahs can pull their heads into their furry necks. Each Boohbah is a different color.

Here is a list of the Boohbahs:

  • Humbah, played by Emma Insley, is a yellow Boohbah.
  • Zumbah, played by Alex Poulter, is a purple Boohbah.
  • Zing Zing Zingbah, played by Cal Jaggers, is an orange Boohbah.
  • Jumbah, played by Phil Hayes, is a blue Boohbah.
  • Jingbah, played by Laura Pero, is a pink Boohbah.

The Storypeople

The Storypeople are characters who live in a place called Storyworld. They appear in short stories during the show. They include:

  • Grandmamma (Linda Kerr-Scott) – An older but active woman. She has white hair and wears a dark pink dress, white sweater, white socks, and red sneakers.
  • Grandpappa (Robin Stevens) – An older, active man. He has white hair and a white mustache. He wears a yellow shirt, dark gray pants, red suspenders, and white sneakers.
  • Mrs. Lady (Harvey Virdi) – An Indian woman. She has dark hair and wears a light blue blouse, bright pink pants, and pink sneakers.
  • Mr. Man (Mark Ramsey) – An African man. He is bald and wears a bright pink shirt, white pants, and black trainers.
  • Brother (Manuel Bravo) and Sister (Vee Vimolmal) – These two are always together. They look like teenagers. Brother is a Latino boy with short dark hair. He wears a bright blue t-shirt, red shorts, and white trainers. Sister is an Asian (Thai) girl with long black hair in a ponytail. She wears a bright red t-shirt, blue capri pants, and white trainers.
  • Auntie (Sachi Kimura) – An Asian (Japanese) woman. She has short black hair and wears a lavender blouse, black pants, lavender socks, and black shoes.
  • Little Dog Fido (Dash) – A Jack Russell Terrier. He wears a red collar.

The Storypeople do not speak. (When Little Dog Fido appears, he barks!) They sometimes show frustration or confusion. However, the Storypeople rarely look upset or sad. The Storyland parts are narrated by actor Chris Langham. In each episode, the Storypeople magically get an object. This object is sent to them by a child or a group of children.

The Boohball

One important part of Boohbah is the Boohball. The Boohball is a glowing white ball. It is where the Boohbahs live. It appears suddenly in different parts of the show. It travels from country to country when children call it. Inside the Boohball, there are pods on a spinning base. This is where the Boohbahs recharge their energy. The energy is created by the laughter of children. This happens when they play with the Boohbahs, the Boohball, and the Storypeople.
