Exploring Bramston Beach's Location

Bramston Beach is located about 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of the bigger city of Cairns. You can reach it by driving about 17 kilometers (11 miles) east from the Bruce Highway on Bramston Beach Road.

Natural Features of the Area

The town sits on two flat coastal areas. These areas are surrounded by small mountains. The north-east side of Bramston Beach faces the Coral Sea.

The northern flat area is partly inside the Russell River National Park. The rest of this land is used for farming, mostly for grazing animals. Bramston Beach Road leads right to the sandy beach here. You will find a small area for homes and camping near the beach.

The southern flat area also has a sandy beach. However, there are no proper roads here, only tracks. This land is also used for farming, mainly for grazing.

Wildlife and Safety at the Beach

The beach at Bramston Beach is a special place for turtles to lay their eggs. But these nesting areas face some natural and human-made dangers. It is also important to know that crocodiles live in the area. Signs are often posted to warn visitors about them.

A Look at Bramston Beach's Past

The town of Bramston Beach is named after Sir John Bramston. He was an important politician in Queensland a long time ago.

Early History and Shipwrecks

In March 1872, a ship called The Maria crashed on a reef. Some people who survived landed their raft near Cooper Point, just south of Bramston Beach. The local Djiru people were very kind to them. They gave the survivors food and shelter. This continued until Captain John Moresby arrived to take them back to British settlements. The survivors spent much of their time at a Djiru village located where Bramston Beach is today. Some Djiru villages had large huts with many entrances.

One of the survivors, W.T. Forster, wrote about his experiences with the Djiru people. Later that year, Forster and some officials returned to thank the Djiru. They brought gifts like blankets. However, the village was empty because the Native Police had visited the day before.
