A Look Back: Brant's History
How Brant Began
The first European settler, Moses Tucker, arrived in the Brant area around 1816. At first, this area was part of a larger town called Willink. On March 25, 1839, Brant officially became its own town. It was created from parts of the towns of Evans and Concord.
Early records from 1860 describe Brant as a flat area near Lake Erie. Cattaraugus Creek forms part of its southern border. Other important streams include Big Sister, Delaware, and Muddy Creeks. The soil is mostly gravelly and clay.
The first religious services in Brant were held by Benj. Olmsted in 1820. The first baby born in the town was a son of John West in 1818. The first marriage was between Levi Grannis and Leah Hallida in 1819. The first person to pass away was Matthew West in 1822.
The town's first mill was built by Sam'l Butts in 1822. Josephus Hubbard opened the first inn in 1825. Milton Morse opened the first store in 1835. The first school was taught by Julia Bradley in 1823.
The Name "Brant"
The town of Brant is named after Colonel Joseph Brant, a well-known leader of the Mohawk people. His Mohawk name was "Tha-yan-da-nee-gah."
Some early stories said his name meant "wood partly burned." However, this is not correct. Joseph Brant's Mohawk name actually meant "he places two bets." His Christian name, Joseph, came from his stepfather. When Native people were baptized, they often received Christian names. Joseph was known as "Brant's Joseph" when he was young, and later became Joseph Brant.
