The History of Bremen

Early Native American Life

Long ago, the Abenaki people spent their summers on Keene Neck. They hunted shellfish like clams and oysters. They left behind large piles of shells called middens. These middens show us where they lived and what they ate.

European Settlement and Challenges

In 1735, William Hilton from Plymouth, Massachusetts, became one of the first European settlers. He settled the area as part of Bristol. However, during the French and Indian Wars, Native Americans forced him to leave.

Hilton returned after a big battle in 1745. This was the Battle of Louisburg. Sadly, in 1755, William Hilton and his sons faced danger. They were attacked by Native Americans, and William Hilton and one of his sons died.

Bremen Becomes a Town

Many German immigrants later settled in this area. They built a community focused on farming and fishing. On February 19, 1828, the area officially became a town. It was named Bremen after the city in Germany.

Today, lobstering, clamming, and tourism are still very important. Bremen is even thought to be the inspiration for Crabapple Cove. This is the fictional hometown of Captain Hawkeye Pierce from the TV show M*A*S*H.
