What is Broad Peak Like?
Broad Peak is part of a group of mountains called the Gasherbrum massif. A massif is a compact group of mountains. It is located in Baltistan, a region on the border of Pakistan and China. This mountain is only about eight kilometres (five miles) away from K2, which is the second-highest mountain in the world!
Broad Peak gets its name because its top is very long, stretching over 1.5 kilometres (7⁄8 mi). It's like a wide, flat ridge at the very top.
Broad Peak's Summits
This mountain actually has five different peaks or summits:
- Broad Peak (8051 meters)
- Rocky Summit (8028 meters)
- Broad Peak Central (8011 meters)
- Broad Peak North (7490 meters)
- Kharut Kangri (6942 meters)
Where Did the Name "Broad Peak" Come From?
The name "Broad Peak" was given to the mountain in 1892 by a British explorer named Martin Conway. He thought it looked similar to a mountain in the Alps called Breithorn, which also means "broad horn."
The local people, the Balti people, don't use the name Falchan Kangri, which is the direct translation of "Broad Peak."
