History of Bucksport
Early Lumber Industry
Bucksport has a rich history, especially with the lumber industry. In the 1820s, a man named Henry Buck moved to South Carolina. He came from a town also called Bucksport, but that one is in Bucksport, Maine. Henry Buck wanted to start new lumber mills.
Horry County was a great place for this because it had huge forests. These forests were full of cypress, pine, and hardwood trees. One of Henry Buck's important mills was built in the area that later became Bucksport.
Buck's Mills and Their Impact
By 1850, the sawmills in Bucksport and nearby Bucksville were very busy. They produced a massive amount of lumber each year. This was about three million board feet of wood!
Henry Buck even owned ships to move all this lumber. He sent wood to cities like Georgetown and Charleston in South Carolina. His ships also traveled to New York City and Boston. Sometimes, his lumber even went to other countries.
Building the Brooklyn Bridge
Did you know that lumber from Buck's operations helped build the famous Brooklyn Bridge? This shows how important Bucksport's lumber industry was. By 1860, Horry County was one of the top five lumber-producing areas in South Carolina. This was largely thanks to the hard work in Bucksville and Bucksport.
