Early life and education
Candace Amber Owens was born in White Plains, New York, on April 29, 1989. She grew up in Stamford, Connecticut, living with her mother and grandparents. She is the third child of four siblings. Her family has roots in different places. Her paternal grandfather was an African American born in North Carolina, while her grandmother was a Caribbean American from Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.
Owens attended Stamford High School in Connecticut, graduating in 2007. During high school, she experienced unfair treatment and bullying from other students. Her family stood up for her legal rights by taking the case to federal court, which ended with a legal settlement in 2008.
After finishing high school, Owens decided to study journalism at the University of Rhode Island. She stayed in college for three years before choosing to move to New York City to start working. In New York, she worked as an intern for Vogue magazine. Later, in 2012, she worked as an administrative assistant for a private equity firm in Manhattan, eventually earning a promotion to vice president of administration.
Career beginnings and online projects
Early media work
In 2015, Owens started a marketing agency called Degree180. The company ran an online blog where writers talked about culture and politics. At that time, Owens held liberal political views and wrote articles that criticized conservative politicians, including members of the Tea Party movement and future president Donald Trump.
In 2016, Owens tried to start an internet project named SocialAutopsy.com. Her plan was to track bullies on the Internet by cataloging rude online posts under users' real names using crowdfunding on Kickstarter. However, many people felt this project would encourage doxing, which means sharing private personal details online without permission, along with public shaming. Both liberal and conservative groups objected to the project. When critics started targeting Owens online, she blamed progressives. During that conflict, she connected with right-wing commentators, including Milo Yiannopoulos and Mike Cernovich, which led her to change her political views entirely.
Becoming a conservative commentator
By late 2017, Owens began promoting conservative ideas and supporting Donald Trump. She created a YouTube channel called "Red Pill Black" to encourage black conservatism in the United States. The title borrowed the red pill and blue pill idea from The Matrix franchise, which is used online to describe discovering a hidden truth.
In November 2017, activist Charlie Kirk hired Owens to work for Turning Point USA, a conservative student organization. She became their director of urban engagement and later their communications director. Her speeches quickly gained national attention. High-profile political figures noticed her work. President Donald Trump described her as an insightful thinker, and leaders in the Republican National Committee praised her energetic speaking style. Other leaders, such as Senator Ted Cruz, spoke positively about her public presence.
In 2018, musician Kanye West expressed interest in her political commentary. By May 2019, Owens moved on from Turning Point USA and began hosting an interview show on the online video network PragerU. During this period, she also mentioned that she was interested in running for high political office, such as a seat in the U.S. Senate or becoming a state governor.
The Daily Wire and independent podcasting
In 2021, Owens joined the conservative media company The Daily Wire to host a political talk show called Candace. The weekly program featured in-studio interviews with guests such as Donald Trump, UFC president Dana White, and politician Jim Jordan.
During her time there, disagreements developed between Owens and company leadership, including commentator Ben Shapiro. After Owens made several controversial remarks about religious groups, company CEO Jeremy Boreing announced in March 2024 that Owens was leaving the network. After leaving the network, Owens launched her own independent media channel on YouTube, continuing her podcast for millions of viewers.
The BLEXIT Foundation
In 2018, Owens helped launch a nonprofit effort named the BLEXIT Foundation alongside speaker Brandon Tatum. The project encouraged members of ethnic minority communities, including African Americans and Latinos, to leave the Democratic Party and join the Republican Party. The name was inspired by the British political movement known as Brexit. In 2023, the BLEXIT Foundation officially merged into Turning Point USA.
Personal life
In December 2018, Owens met British businessman George Farmer, the son of British politician Lord Farmer. The couple became engaged the following year and were married in August 2019 at the Trump Winery in Charlottesville, Virginia. The ceremony was attended by various political commentators, including Larry Elder and Charlie Kirk.
Owens and Farmer have four children together. In 2024, Owens announced that she had joined the Catholic Church, following the faith of her husband after previously practicing as an evangelical Christian.
