Caringbah is a suburb located in Southern Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is about 24 kilometres south of the main city area of Sydney. Caringbah is part of the Sutherland Shire local government area.
Caringbah used to be much bigger. It stretched from Woolooware Bay to Yowie Bay and Burraneer Bay. Now, some parts of Caringbah have become their own suburbs. These include Taren Point, Port Hacking, Lilli Pilli, Dolans Bay, and Caringbah South. Even though they are separate, they all share the same postcode, 2229.

History of Caringbah
The name Caringbah comes from an Aboriginal word. It means "a pademelon wallaby," which is a small type of wallaby. The area was first called Highfield. It's not clear why it had this name.
The name Caringbah started being used in 1911. This was when steam trams began running between Cronulla and Sutherland.
In the 1860s, a man named Thomas Holt owned most of the land here. This land stretched from Sutherland all the way to Cronulla.
From the 1880s, much of the land around Miranda and Caringbah was used for growing vegetables. People also grew fruit in orchards. This continued until after World War II. The train line to Cronulla opened in 1939.
What's in Caringbah?
Caringbah has a mix of homes, shops, and businesses. The main shopping area is near the Caringbah train station. It is located where President Avenue, The Kingsway, and Port Hacking Road South meet.
You can find many small businesses here. They offer services like accounting or legal help. There is also a large area with shops and factories. This area is mostly along Taren Point Road. You can find big stores like Bunnings and places that sell furniture or home renovation items.
A smaller group of shops is called Caringbah South. It is further south on Port Hacking Road South. The Caringbah Library is also on this road. Caringbah is home to two hospitals: Sutherland Hospital and Kareena Private Hospital.
Getting Around Caringbah
Caringbah is a central spot in the Sutherland Shire. Many important roads meet here. President Avenue and The Kingsway both connect Sutherland and Miranda in the west to Cronulla beach in the east.
Taren Point Road goes north. It leads to the Captain Cook Bridge and then towards the Sydney central business district.
Caringbah railway station is on the Cronulla branch of the T4 train line. This is part of the Sydney Trains network.

The 2016 census counted 11,658 people living in Caringbah.

- Most people (73.9%) were born in Australia.

- English was the main language spoken at home by 80.1% of people.

- Caringbah Selective High School is the only academically selective high school in the Sutherland Shire. This means students need to pass a test to get in.
