Carlton is a town in Orleans County, New York, United States. It's located in the northern part of the county, right on the shore of Lake Ontario. In 2010, about 2,994 people lived here. The town's name comes from "Carleton," a place in Canada known for shipbuilding.

Carlton's Story: A Look at Its History

The Town of Carlton was created in 1822 from parts of two other towns, Gaines and Ridgeway. Back then, it was called "Town of Oak Orchard." A few years later, in 1825, its name was changed to "Carlton."

Important Moments in Carlton's Past

  • In 1883, a politician named Thomas Hoyne passed away in a train accident near Carlton Station.
  • In 2013, a small area in Carlton called Point Breeze was named the "Ultimate Fishing Town" in the United States. This happened after an online contest that showed how great the town is for sport fishing. Point Breeze is where Lake Ontario meets the Oak Orchard River.

  • Ashwood: A place on the border with the Town of Yates.
  • Baldwin Corner: A small community (hamlet) north of Carlton on NY-98.
  • Brighton Cliff: A spot right on the shore of Lake Ontario.
  • The Bridges: Also known as "Three Bridges," this area is where Routes NY-98 and NY-18 cross the Oak Orchard River and Marsh Creek. It's south of Point Breeze.
  • Carlton Station (or Carlton): This hamlet is where the town government offices are located, right on NY-98.
  • Jones Beach: A lakeside hamlet in the northeast part of the town.
  • Kent: Also called "East Carlton" or "Brice Station," this hamlet is on the border with the Town of Kendall.
  • Kenyonville: A hamlet found on the north side of the Oak Orchard River.
  • Kuckville: Also known as "West Carlton," this hamlet in the northwest part of town is named after George Kuck.
  • Lakeside Park: A hamlet located on the shore of Lake Ontario.
  • Lakeside Beach State Park: A state park right on Lake Ontario. It's where the Lake Ontario State Parkway ends in the west.

  • Oak Orchard On The Lake: A hamlet west of the Oak Orchard River that started as a summer resort around 1883.
  • Point Breeze: A hamlet on Lake Ontario, next to the Oak Orchard River and the Oak Orchard State Marine Park. NY-98 ends here.
  • Rock Ledge Beach: A hamlet on the east side of Lakeside Beach State Park.
  • Sawyer: Also known as "Curtis Corners," this hamlet is on NY-18 in the eastern part of the town.
  • Sunset Beach: A location on the shore of Lake Ontario.
  • Toms Landing: A hamlet right next to the Oak Orchard River.
  • Waterport: A hamlet on NY-279 where Otter Creek joins the Oak Orchard River. This is where the river gets its widest. Waterport is in the western part of the town and has the post office for most of Carlton.
  • Waterport Reservoir: A reservoir located near the hamlet of Waterport.
  • Waterport Station: A location on the north side of the Oak Orchard River, north of Waterport on NY-279.
