A Look at Carrick's History

Carrick was originally part of a large piece of land given to Major John Ormsby. This gift came from King George III in 1763. It was a reward for Ormsby's service during the French and Indian War. Carrick and Mt. Oliver were once known together as the Ormsby Tract.

This area became known for its coal mines. There was also a glass factory in an area called Crailo, or Spiketown. This was near the Presbyterian Church and Volunteers Field.

In 1853, Dr. John H. O'Brien got permission to open a post office here. He was given the honor of naming it. He chose "Carrick" after his hometown, Carrick-on-Suir, in Ireland. Carrick officially became a borough in 1904. Later, in 1926, the people voted for Carrick to join the City of Pittsburgh. In 1927, it became known as Pittsburgh's 29th Ward.
