History of Catharine
Catharine was started in April 1876 by immigrants from Germany. They came from a town in Russia called Katharinenstadt. They named their new home in Kansas after it. The original Katharinenstadt was an important business center. Because of this, the first settlers in Catharine were often wealthier than people in other German settlements nearby.
More German settlers arrived in Catharine over the next two years. Then, starting in 1878, people from Austria also moved to the community. Catharine's first school opened in 1879. This building also served as a church until St. Catherine's Catholic Church was finished in 1892. The town's first post office opened in 1882.
Geography and Climate
Catharine is located in the Smoky Hills region of the Great Plains. It sits on the east side of North Fork Big Creek. This creek is part of the Smoky Hill River system.
The community is about 3 miles (5 km) north of Interstate 70. It is also about 6 miles (10 km) northeast of Hays, which is the main town in Ellis County.
