History of Center Sandwich
Center Sandwich started because of water power. In 1768, a gristmill was built here by Daniel Beede. This mill used water to grind grain. Later, in 1780, a sawmill was added. Both mills were on the Red Hill River.
After the mills were built, roads came to the area. The village grew a lot between 1790 and 1820. Its population went from about 900 to over 2,000 people. Most of the buildings you see today were built before the Civil War. They show styles like Federal and Greek Revival.
Center Sandwich became less important after the Civil War. This was because no railroads were built to connect it to other places. Not many changes happened in the village during the 1900s. The oldest building still standing is the Baptist church from 1792. It started with a Federal style but later got Greek Revival features.
