The Ceratophryinae, also known as common horned frogs, are a group of fascinating frogs. They belong to a larger family of frogs called Leptodactylidae. You can find all species of these horned frogs living in South America.

These frogs have been around for a very long time! Scientists have found fossils of a giant horned frog called Beelzebufo in Madagascar. This suggests that these frogs might have once lived across a huge ancient landmass called Gondwana during the Cretaceous period. That was about 70 million years ago!

Not all horned frogs actually have horn-like bumps above their eyes. But they all share some cool features. They are all carnivorous, meaning they eat other animals. They can be land-dwelling or live partly in water (semi-aquatic). A key feature is their very large heads and wide mouths!

Some people even enjoy keeping these unique frogs as pets.

Meet the Horned Frogs!

This group of frogs includes several different types, or genera. Here are some of the known ones:

  • Beelzebufo, Evans, Jones, & Krause, 2008. This is the giant fossil frog mentioned earlier.
  • Ceratophrys, Wied-Neuwied, 1824. These are some of the most well-known horned frogs.
  • Chacophrys, Reig & Limeses, 1963.
  • Lepidobatrachus, Budgett, 1899.
  • Macrogenioglottus, Carvalho, 1946.
  • Odontophrynus, Reinhardt & Lütken, 1862.
  • Proceratophrys, Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920.
