Charles George Patrick Shaughnessy, the 5th Baron Shaughnessy, was born on February 9, 1955. He is a British actor well-known for his roles on American television. You might recognize him as Shane Donovan from the soap opera Days of Our Lives. He also played Maxwell Sheffield on the sitcom The Nanny. He even won a Daytime Emmy Award for voicing Dennis the Goldfish on Stanley.
He also had recurring roles as Christopher Plover on The Magicians and St. John Powell on Mad Men. More recently, Shaughnessy was a regular on the ABC soap opera General Hospital, playing the character Victor Cassadine.
Along with his brother, David Shaughnessy, and Ophelia Soumekh, he is a partner in a company called 3S Media Solutions Inc.

Early Life and Family
Charles Shaughnessy was born in London on February 9, 1955. His father, Alfred Shaughnessy, was a television writer. His mother, Jean Lodge, was an actress. His brother, David Shaughnessy, is also an actor, producer, and director.
Charles comes from a family with a history in entertainment. His great-grandfather, Thomas Shaughnessy, was the first Baron Shaughnessy. He was an important railway manager in America and Canada. Charles inherited the title of Baron when his second cousin, Michael, passed away in 2007 without children.
Education and Early Acting
Because he grew up in a show business family, Charles started acting in plays when he was in primary school. He went to Eton College and then studied law at Magdalene College, Cambridge. While at Cambridge, he joined the famous Footlights comedy club.
After college, he decided to become an actor. He went to drama school in London and then toured with a theater group. In 1983, he moved to the United States and married actress Susan Fallender. They have two daughters, Jenny (born in 1990) and Maddy (born in 1995).

Soap Opera Success
From 1984 to 1992, Shaughnessy played Shane Donovan on the soap opera Days of Our Lives. His character's love story with Kimberly Brady, played by Patsy Pease, became very popular. They were known as a "supercouple" and helped bring many teenage viewers to the show in the 1980s. He returned to Days of Our Lives for special appearances in 2002, 2010, 2012–2013, 2016–2017, and 2023.
The Nanny and Other TV Roles
From 1993 to 1999, Shaughnessy starred as Maxwell Sheffield alongside Fran Drescher in the CBS sitcom The Nanny. After The Nanny, he and Fran Drescher worked together again on her next sitcom, Living with Fran. He often appeared as her ex-husband, Ted, until the show ended in 2006.
In 1996, he appeared in the TV movie A Kiss So Deadly. He also appeared in the Disney Channel movie Get a Clue in 2002. In 2000, he was in the Halloween TV movie Mom's Got a Date with a Vampire. He also made two appearances on Sabrina in 2000, playing different characters. In 2004, he played Alec Colson in an episode of Stargate SG-1.
Shaughnessy also voiced Dennis the Goldfish on the Disney Channel cartoon series Stanley. For this role, he won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program in 2002.
Later TV and Voice Work
In 2008, Shaughnessy played a character in Murder 101: The Locked Room Mystery. He also provided voice-overs for Range Rover car commercials. In December 2008, he voiced Pietro in the movie The Tale of Despereaux.
In 2009, he made a guest appearance on The Mentalist and on Hannah Montana as a talent show judge. He also starred as Captain Elliot Sanders in the web series The Bay starting in 2010.
He has continued to make guest appearances on various TV shows. These include Happily Divorced (2011), Castle (2012), Victorious (2012), Dog with a Blog (2014), Revenge (2014), NCIS (2017), Modern Family (2019), and The Winchesters (2023).
