Charles Robert Gardiner (born December 31, 1904 – died June 13, 1934) was a famous Canadian ice hockey goaltender. He played for the Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League (NHL). Gardiner was known for his amazing skills in goal. He helped his team win their first major championship.

Early Life and Hockey Start
Charlie Gardiner was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. When he was seven, his family moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. This is where he started his hockey journey.
He played junior hockey with the Winnipeg Tigers. This was from 1921 to 1924. After that, he joined the Selkirk Fishermen for one season. The next year, he played for the Winnipeg Maroons. This team was part of the American Hockey Association.
Joining the Chicago Black Hawks
In 1927, Charlie Gardiner joined the Chicago Black Hawks. He played as their main goalie for seven years. He quickly became one of the best goalies in the league.
Winning the Vezina Trophy
Charlie Gardiner won the Vezina Trophy twice. This award goes to the best goalie in the NHL. He won it in 1932 and again in 1934. He was also chosen for the NHL First All-Star Team. This happened in 1931, 1932, and 1934.
Leading the Team to the Stanley Cup
In the 1933–34 season, Charlie Gardiner became the captain of the Black Hawks. This was a big honor for a goalie. He led his team to their first-ever Stanley Cup championship. This was a huge moment for the team and their fans.
Legacy and Hall of Fame
Sadly, Charlie Gardiner passed away shortly after winning the Stanley Cup. He was only 29 years old. Even though his career was short, he left a lasting impact on hockey.
He was one of the first players to be added to the Hockey Hall of Fame. This happened in 1945. In 1998, he was ranked number 76 on The Hockey News' list of the 100 Greatest Hockey Players.
