Charlotte Mailliard Shultz (born Smith; September 26, 1933 – December 3, 2021) was a well-known person in society and a philanthropist. A philanthropist is someone who gives money and time to help good causes. She held a special job as the Chief of Protocol for the state of California. She was also the Chief of Protocol for the City and County of San Francisco.

Charlotte was married to George P. Shultz, who used to be the United States Secretary of State. They were married from 1997 until he passed away in 2021. She was also the President of the board for the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center. She was a member of many other important groups, like the San Francisco Symphony and the San Francisco Ballet.

Charlotte Smith was born on September 26, 1933, in Borger, Texas. Her parents were Martha Morgan and Charles Samuel Smith, Jr. They owned a local general store.

She went to the University of Arkansas. There, she studied fashion design, marketing, and merchandising.

As the Chief of Protocol for San Francisco, Charlotte Mailliard was known as the "city's best party-giver." This job meant she was in charge of welcoming important guests. She also organized big events for the city.

She started this job as a volunteer for Mayor Jack Shelley. She worked for seven different mayors. Later, Mayor Willie Brown asked her to return to the role in 1996.

In total, she served eight mayors. During her time, she brought back the city's Black and White Ball. This was a very famous event. She also helped organize the 50th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge. For this event, one million people walked across the bridge. She also welcomed important visitors like British royalty and Pope John Paul II to the city.

In 2003, a surprise party was held in San Francisco to honor her. Many famous people attended, including baseball legend Willie Mays. The staircase of San Francisco City Hall was even named the Charlotte Mailliard Shultz Staircase to honor her work.

In 2004, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed her. She became the Chief of Protocol for the entire State of California.

Her Family Life

After moving to San Francisco, Charlotte met her first husband, John Ward Mailliard III. He passed away in 1986.

In 1988, she married Melvin Swig. He owned the Fairmont Hotel. Together, Melvin and Charlotte gave and raised a lot of money. This money helped build the new San Francisco Public Library. Melvin Swig passed away in 1993.

In 1997, at age 63, Charlotte married George Shultz. He was a former Secretary of State. Their wedding at Grace Cathedral was a huge event in San Francisco. Many important guests attended, including Nancy Reagan. The couple continued to be very active in San Francisco social events. They often hosted diplomats and important visitors at their home.

Charlotte Mailliard Shultz passed away at her home in Stanford, California, on December 3, 2021. She was 88 years old. Her husband, George, had passed away 10 months earlier.

Special Awards

In 2007, Queen Elizabeth II gave her a special honor. She was named an Honorary Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO).
