Cheakamus Mountain is a tall mountain in British Columbia, Canada. It stands at 2,588-metre (8,491-foot) high. This mountain is covered with glaciers, which are like huge, slow-moving rivers of ice.
You can find Cheakamus Mountain in Garibaldi Provincial Park. It's part of the Coast Mountains, a big mountain range along the Pacific coast. Specifically, it belongs to the Garibaldi Ranges and is the fourth-highest peak in the Fitzsimmons Range.
The mountain is about 16 km (10 mi) southeast of Whistler. Its closest taller neighbor is Mount Benvolio, which is 1.65 km (1 mi) away.
A glacier called the Diavolo Glacier is located on the north side of Cheakamus Mountain. Water from rain and melting ice on the mountain flows into streams that eventually join the Cheakamus River.
The mountain gets its name from the Cheakamus River. The river's name comes from the Squamish language word Tseearkamisht. This word means "people who use the cedar rope fishing net." The mountain's name became official on September 2, 1930. The first people to climb Cheakamus Mountain were Roy Hooley, Jimmy Kilborn, and Ian Kirk in 1950.
Mountain Weather
Cheakamus Mountain has a "marine west coast" climate. This means it gets a lot of rain and snow. Most of the weather comes from the Pacific Ocean. As these weather systems move east, they hit the Coast Mountains. The mountains force the air to rise, which makes it cool down and drop its moisture. This is why the Coast Mountains get so much rain and snow, especially in winter.
In winter, temperatures on the mountain can get very cold, sometimes dropping below −20 °C. With the wind, it can feel even colder, below −30 °C! If you want to climb Cheakamus Mountain, the best time to go is usually from July to September. The weather is much nicer then.
